Bought from a Waitrose in London, where it was tagged as being brewed as an exclusive for the supermarket chain. £3 for a 440ml. I'm not familiar with the brewery, and I bought it simply as I knew I'd never seen it before, so thought I'd give it a try, especially as it was an 'exclusive and limited' production. ...Then I got home took a closer look at the can and saw it's named 'Tropical KO'... Right, I'll be honest, that does sound promising to me; I prefer beer to taste like beer rather than a fruit soda, and I prefer subtlety via crafting and balance - the opposite of any form of 'KO' but we'll see...
L- Pours with the absolute faintest amount of haze. It's surprisngly orange, in daylight a shade where orange is so dark it nears pale brown. Pours with a 2Cm pillowy fine-bubble just off-white head.
S- I could smell lychee even when gently pouring it. The smell also suggests some richness, but it isn't beer-like.
T- Ohhhh... The lychee perfume moves some way into the background as a dry citrus fruit cocktail bulldozes through. I'm still struggling to find grains or malts here.
F- Purely on Feel terms the fruity overkill above is quite sucessfully balanced by the 6.2% ABV. That brings a richness, part off-setting the hoppy dryness.
O- I wonder if the beer is more set on making a statement at any cost than having much utility. It's perhaps pitched as a summer beer, but at 6.2%, the ABV might work better in colder months/winter. Perhaps ironicly I wonder if this beer is designed for people who don't really enjoy the taste of beer.
I suspect the richness of the ABV saves it for me. Another of theirs I had yesterday was similarly as OTT on fruit, but at c4.2% was quite soon undrinkable. This one has enough balance that I will finish it, but I won't be buying beer from this brewery again.
