Tasted on-tap at the Bunker brewpub in Covent Garden, London, but it's not brewed under the brand "Bunker" anymore, and there's a story behind it...
The ex-Freedom brewery (which took over the Soho Brewing Co. at the current site of Bunker in 1999) was acquired by Brothers Brewing Co Ltd in October 2004, and a new brewery was set up later in Abbots Bromley nr. Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, to benefit from the famous Burton water and produce the whole range of Freedom brands (Organic, Pilsener, Soho Red). As the Bunker brewpub in Covent Garden belongs to the same group, now the new beer "Soho Red" is brewed on site there as well, but the brand name has been changed to "Freedom". So, I really don't know whether it should be here or the site of Freedom/Brothers Brewing Co. where I am to add this new brew? (Well, what a mess.)
A: describing itself in line with "North American style Red Ale", no doubt it comes in a dark russet to light mahogany-red colour, with a thin foamy head and moderate carbonation.
S: mild caramely sweet malts, buttressed by mixed, sour-sweet fruity note: apples, date jam, preserved prunes, and a touch of black tea-ish hoppyness. Quite fruity overnote with a firm maly backbone. Not too bad.
T: delicious fruity flavour upfront: (almost fermented) apples, sour edge of raisins, longan-fruit tea... plus a sticky sugary taste of caramel; a refreshingly floral as well as subtly citric hoppy edge (like Liberty hops) develops at the back, accompanied by a chewy, toffee-ish bitter-sweet aftertaste of crystal malts with a slightly dryish kick. Alas, no considerable bitterness is left in the finish.
M&D: clean and crisp mouthfeel, refreshingly fizzy, medium-minus bodied red ale in need of both complex flavour and depth. A somewhat balance is there b/w bitter-sweet malts and sour tinge of dark fruits, but overall this is not really an impressive offer at this brewpub.
P.S. I gather from somewhere else that this beer was first brewed by the Soho Brewing Co. on ths same site in late 1990s. So I guess Freedom/Brothers Brewing Co. intends to revive this "old heritage"? Got to try harder~~
