"So what's going on ere' then?" asks the elf. "Black Pale Ale makes no sense at all!"
"We agree completely" said the brewer, "but what else do you call a bottle - fermented black ale that tastes like american pale ale if you close your eyes?"
Ere's to your elf!

a: some slight haze and a nice burnt yellow color. pours a 1 finger frothy, almost silky tan head

s: some sweet earthy grains and a faint generic berry note. sweet lemons and light caramel. really mellow, yet very noticable bready note. fruit bread and slight grapefruit

t: grainy bready presence upfront, followed by a slight earthy herbal hop note which provides a touch of bitterness. sweetbread behind that with faint sweet lemons. light caramel sweetness and just the faintest hint of grapefruit bitterness on the sides of the tongue

m: lighter medium mouthfeel with moderate carbonation

o: a very enjoyable beer to drink. it's light, but not lacking on flavor. a bit delicate but not too light

500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.5%. Very dark ruby colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Moderate aroma of roast malts, notes of mild coffee, hints of piney hops. Medium dry flavour with some piney hops and mild roasty notes. Okay as a thirstquencher, but nothing particularly "christmassy" about it.

L- Very dark brown, has a distinctive clear deep red glint to it when held up to a light. Pours with 3mm pale tan head of very fine bubbles that is holding well.
S- Bready, grainy, some toastiness - overall mild though.
T- Somewhat roasty-toasty and into a quite strident trad hop note into the finish. There is something else here just before the finish, it tastes a little synthetic but the ingredients gives no clues and I can't ID it further as it's fleeting twist.
F- Trad and pretty dry. It feels about it's 4.5%ABV
O- It's ok but nothing special. I can finish it but wouldn't wish to drink it again. The look is really good but otherwise it's pedestrian. The branding/labelling is pretty naff. Labelling suggests it's brewed for the US export market - it is in a pretty hefty (export rated?) trad style bottle that home-brewers might be pleased to re-use.
Note: the lable is unchanged. Lable suggests it is bottle-fermented but I got zero sediment in the glass and there is none left in the bottle.
500ml, volume also marked for the US 1Pt9FlOz Bb: 20/07/22. Bought from TremblingMadness/York/UK for home delivery

Bottle. Very dark amber. Thin wispy head.
An aroma of hops with liquorice. Rather odd. Some faint spice detected.
Grassy taste. Earthy - a bit farmyard. Blackcurrant?
Medium body.
All rather strange.
