750 ml Bottle labeled "Annual Employee Meeting January 26, 2006"
Pours a bright copper colored body with two fingers of dense light tan foam with better than average staying power. Aroma is lightly malty with a slight English flair.
Entry is fairly quiet, sporting less than medium carbonation. Midtaste shows a touch of roasted malt in this German brown with a gentle sweetness grazing the tip of the tongue.
The finish begins with a nicely balanced hop presence at the rear of the mouth, quickly followed by an even hoppier (by alt standards) fade.
As others have noted, this beer is highly quaffable, but doesn't push any boundries in terms of being extreme. Pair this with a smoked Gouda for maximum enjoyment.

Ur-Alt
"Alt Or Nothing!"
Annual Employee Meeting, January 26, 2006, 750 ml bottle, 4.7% abv
Clear, rich, honeyed amber color, fine, if this, layer of whitish head....
Aroma is malty, grainy, very hoppy, vibrant, raw...yet clean...not to my usual liking, however...
Taste: crisp, clean, light malty feel, bready, but plenty hoppy too...and still missing something in the mouthfeel, something substantial lacks in the body...not bad for a not-bad beer, but I'd want something extra...an easy-to-drink beer, custom made for a all-purpose gathering...not the sort I'd choose for a beer for my own, but a nice brew to share with those of less driscriminatin' tastes...crisp, hoppy, malty, dry...that's the order...a clean, lean, stripped-down brew....does taste rather like an alt, but an extra-hoppy version...not that I mind.

I found this on tap at the gasthaus pub which adjoins the brewery. Apparently this relaease uses the recipe of the first beer ever produced by Widmer. The bar also has another Alt (their current take on the style). That one is referred to as Alt rather than Ur Alt.
The bartender reckoned that the Ur Alt is the more interesting of the two so I figured I would give it a try. It has a pleasant tan colour and a decent head and boasts a very sweet malty nose which reminded me most of brown sugar.
The smell seems misleading. The hops in this mix really pack a punch. They kick in very quickly before seeming to relent for a while as the sweet flavour the nose suggests comes into play before giving way to bitter, bitter hops again. This is really good stuff. If only I could find such good Widmer beers in the supermarket.
