A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of April 2019. Acquired recently from ALDI as part of their 2018 beer festival. Described on the label as a refreshing ale with citrusy hop flavours; inspired by a recipe from 1885. I wonder if this is a variant of their Gold ale.
A: Poured into a straight pint glass. A clear golden-amber colour with good carbonation and faint sediment. Forms a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or two before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Slight lacing.
S: Aroma of fruity ale yeast with hints of stewed hops, hay, mild earthiness, light grainy malt and a harsh quality in the background. Pretty dull fare; no citrus to be discerned.
T: Tastes of fruity ale yeast with notes of esters, stewed hops/leaves, hay, mild overdone veg, subtle earthiness, pale malt and a twinge of acrid cardboard in the background. Very dry, followed by a moderate, twiggy bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with spritzy carbonation and average body for the style. A tad watery and mildly astringent. Aftertaste of bitter stewed leaves, harsh cardboard, hay, ale yeast and pale malt.
O: Meh - no great shakes. Looks OK, while the aroma and flavour are bland and uninspired with an acrid bitter character. So-so body. The refreshing citrus is decidedly absent. Not a very interesting brew; give it a miss.
