Dark brown with a ruby tinge, loads of champagne carbonation, and half a finger of beige head.
Caramelized to near burnt sugar, light fruitiness, alcohol, a hint of ripe banana.
Caramelized sugar, esters, light fruitiness, a strange middle weakness of taste, then a barrage of muted burnt and alcohol notes on the end.
Light body, little carbonation.
Found at Villa Market in Bangkok, drank in Chiang Mai Oct 24th, 2015. I was expecting a bock or double bock, so surprised to see it listed as an English Strong Ale. It has the qualities of both.

A: Dark amber with a small off-white head.
S: Very strong chemical smell, like detergent or something.
T: Not a Bock. It's a strong ale with a bit of Bock nuttiness. A bit of bubblegum. It tastes like two perfectly good beers mixed together.
O: Not a great offering from Bateman's.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2014. Picked up last year as part of the Sainsbury's 2013 Beer Hunt. The label calls it a 'Bavarian-style Strong Ale' - an hommage to dopplebock.
A: Poured into a tulip pint glass. A deep, clear reddish-brown colour with good carbonation. Forms a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before settling as a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of fruity yeast esters with hints of sweet caramel, raisins, dried fruit, mild brown sugar, ale yeast, vague breadiness and a twinge of stewed leaves. OK but quite fruity.
T: Tastes of sweet caramel and fruity yeast with a lingering finish. Notes of caramel malt, dried fruit, a hint of fruitcake, faint brown sugar, fruity yeast esters, a twinge of banana and subtle stewed leaves. Perhaps a touch of cardboard lurking in the background. Quite sweet, followed by a mild, yeasty character upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and a slightly insubstantial body for the strength. Lightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of fruity yeast esters, caramel malt and stewed leaves.
O: Hmm - OK but not brilliant. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are fruity and sweet, with plenty of caramel in evidence. So-so body. It comes across as fermented with ale yeast, which probably makes it fruitier than a true doppelbock would be. I can't shake the impression that this is a subpar imitation. Drinkable enough if you like sweet, malty brews, but no need to seek it out.
