June 2007: Cask conditioned at The Golden Lion, York. ABV was 4.2%. Golden brown colour, creamy head. Fruity hops in the aroma. Nicely hopped flavour. A pleasant drink.

Reviewed from recently found notes:

On cask in a small Scottish pub - outside of Dundee as I recall.

Orange highlighting on the edges of a lighter golden colored ale. Served with a super-tight, creamy, white head. Looks fine.

The nose was subdued below the tight foam. Some pale malt, grain sweetness, with herbal hopping.

Definitely enjoy the flavor. Lots of sharp bitterness that slices right through the toasted malt. Mostly herbal, a little grassy, and a floral finish. Long in the mouth with the warm cask temp.

Okay mouthfeel, I've had much better bitters on cask. Firm this up and you've got a pretty complex and challenging ale.

Long time fan of this beer, but never reviewed it until now for some reason.

The review is from a tasting at the bi-annual beer festival at the Bateman's brewery. They put on 5 cask beers of their own and have another 15 barrels from small brewers also available to drink.

Hand-pulled in the base of their famous windmill, my pint glass looked beautiful, a light amber, golden beer, this was clear and had a good off-white head sat on top.

The Styrian and Challenger hops give it a good hoppy aroma and the taste is crisp, sharp and refreashing.

The flavours stay in the mouth, with bitterness coming through towards the end.

A great beer, from a good brewery.
