Procured by my brother, a one time employee of MBC. Hand Labeled bottle #128 of 144. Bottled in 2004, opened for Chrstmas 2005.
Lots of chocolate on the nose and a hint of red wine with a decent amount of woody toasted oak character. Deeply Fruity.
Ruby red, a little bit cloudy. No head.
Holy crap. Flavor is unbeleiveably complex. I get lots and lots of Am.Barleywine. Strong hop presence, lots of malt but also the added complexity of Oak barrels that give it a Bordeaux-like qualtiy. Tons of Roast. Still pretty hoppy after year of age. Slightly alcoholic on the back end. I also get berries and chocolate.
Very full bodied and warming. A little undercarbonated but for a barrel aged year old barleywine it's acceptable levels.
Definitely a long sipping savoring big beer. Super rare and the best Christmas present I got this year. (BTW he hinted that I might see bottle #129 next Christmas if he doesn't drink it first.)
Truly a rare treat!
