A - Served a dark black with a bit of brown mixed in with a finger of frothy chocolate head. The head fades down slowly leaving behind some nice lace.

S - Aroma is full of roasted chocolate malts, with some bitter chocolate as well, with a bit of sweetness, and some coffee.

T - Starts out with some strong rich chocolate flavor, with some roasted flavors and a bit of coffee. Through the middle, some light sweetness comes through with some more bitter cocoa. The finish is a mix of roasted chocolates with a bit of light vanilla and dark fruit in the background.

M - Medium-full bodied with mild carbonation. Felt smooth with a bit of a syrupy sweet finish.

D - Very drinkable. I really like the big chocolate flavor here and the complexity of it. It is big and rich but not overpowering.

On tap at Marin Brewery. Pours a very dark brown with a tiny whitish-brown head that doesn't last very long. Scent is immediately heavy with chocolate cocoa... reminds me of the homemade hot chocolate mix my mom used to make. Just a hint of anise with some roasted malt and a tiny bit of coffee. A little vanilla as well. Taste is initially like hot chocolate. Hot cocoa with some bitter-sweet chocolate and vanilla. Mouthfeel is creamy and full-bodied. Drinkability is high, as the ABV is very well-hidden. Overall, this is probably the best offering I've had from Marin. I like the White Knuckle IPA, but didn't care for much of their other stuff. This one is fantastic though!

A bottle left over after GABF judging and given to me as a reward for my volunteer efforts. Pours a finger of light brown head over a pitch liquid. Smells chocolate, roast, anise, english hops (fuggles?), light esters, and clean alcohol. With searching, I get a belgian candi-sugar aroma.

Tastes roast, chocolate, grassy, and drying sour from black malt. Some light esters mix with clean alcohol sting in a way similar to one would find in St. Bernardus Abt 12. Very nice. Delicious rolling chocolate lingers. Has a touch of astringent dryness in the aftertaste that detracts. Some creaminess and modest carbonation. One to try if given the chance.
