I was entirely convinced the waitress had mistakenly served me an IPA. Steelhead offers six regular beers, including this one, but had a total of four IPAs on tap when I visited. The IPA list included their regular Bombay Bomber, an English-style IPA, and a special light IPA they had both on tap and cask-conditioned.
I examined my beer carefully, tasted it, smelled it. I was careful not to drink much of it for I was certain theyd made a mistake and would need to take this beer away and bring me a real pale ale. But my waitress assured me there was no mistake. This was the White Dog Pale Ale.
This is a nice beer to be certain. Its flavorful and satisfying. But its a flavorful and satisfying IPA. The hop character is flowery, citrusy and abundant. It is clouded dark apricot color with a few threads of lace, a hemi-rim of head, and a faint citrus aroma. But the malt profile is entirely obscure and this just isnt a pale ale at all. What to do?
Ordinarily I simply judge a beer on its own merits, irrespective of style. But that rule is not absolute and Im making an exception to it here. With a total of ten taps pouring and four of them IPAs, theres just no justification in serving another hoppy IPA and labeling it a pale. Any redeeming properties this beer might possess are lost in the IPA shuffle. I am therefore defining this as a nice beer but a poor representation of the pale ale style. So be it.
