an incredibly dark and rich and thick stout, packed with about as much roasted barley as you can fit into a glass of beer, inky and syrupy and bitter, a russian imperial vibe to this one more than anything else, and a beer that will reward the patient drinker, warming up well as it sits, opening up quite a lot. its super dark, and the head is one of the darkest i have seen, not much lighter than the black beer beneath it, just a half inch high and quite dense. high shine to this, long legs in my snifter, and all the body in the world. aroma is a little burnt, some dark grape character too like fortified wine, and a ton of dark bitter chocolate. it has an almost wood aged thing to it, and a trace of a sour mashed element or something, maybe more than just barley in the grain bill as well. bitter through the whole thing, but the texture goes more with sweeter stouts, so dense its almost gelatinous, pretty well hidden alcohol strength too. long linger, nuances of licorice, english ale yeast, and even black pepper. its almost still, but thats okay in a style like this. i like how intense the flavor is, this is bolder than most, and without any of the stuff thats making these trendy right now, cereal, graham crackers, marshmallows, whatever, its just beer, and its a good one. this is my first from these guys, wintery and huge.
