Presentation: This was tried as part of a Sampler, but I had a Full Pint of this on a recent trip and visit to the Brewpub in Las Vegas on 26th October. From my ailing memory, this was by far the best of the bunch when I was last in Las Vegas, and it appears that it still is.

Appearance: Served in a clean-lined flute like super-sized Pint Glass. Black with hints of an oily brown hue and a very smooth, creamy looking light cocoa brown colored head. Good levels of dissolved carbon dioxide with some minimal lacing.

Nose: Incredibly dark roasted malts in the nose with some deeply roasted, burnt coffee bean hints and some even darker chocolate – dark and deep.

Taste: Lovely dark roasted malts cut the tongue with a crisp coffee-bitterness. A clinging malty-bitterness, with a clean hop feel rings the middle of the beer. The ending is quiet short, probably its only real drawback, yet somehow this aids the Drinkability somewhat, because you want more as soon as the taste fades.

Mouthfeel: The smooth malts and the softness that the oatmeal brings to the palate, mixed with the excellent conditioning make this a Stout that sits in the mouth easily, but with a definitive “stout” feel it stands up to accompanying food (I had a bowl of deep fried Onion Rings with the Stout - Mmmm) extremely well.

Drinkability: Highly quaffable, the smoothness on draft makes it relatively easy to quaff this one. After a prior days hard drinking, this was still easily imbibed.

Overall: Described in the Brewpub Menu and on the Bottle Labels with the words “Silver State Stout is a dry, yet surprisingly smooth version of a traditional Irish Stout. A complex blend of six types of barley and oatmeal create a complex flavor profile and rich mouth-feel.” – That’s a pretty good description.

For me this was the best beer on sale when I first visited the Monte Carlo Brewpub, and after a recent visit I would say that this is still very much the case.

Pours with a one-finger light brown head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Black color. Heavy bodied. Nose is burnt coffee. Very light carbonation, two months in the cellar did nothing. Starts with a slight bitter coffee flavor, much milder than a Guinness. Sold as part of a 6-pack from their gift shop for $13.92 by the casino in Las Vegas, NV.

Solid dark dark brown, not quite black, with a tan head that faded from dense to nothing in a minute. They seemingly shot for, and duplicated, Guiness to some extent. It's almost Guiness but not quite, perhaps a clip better but maybe a bit thinner and too sweet. Besides the Red, the tenders seemed most 'proud' of this one as a sure bet. And it just about is but I heard from a local that it's really inconsistent. Given my experience over a weeks period, seperated by five days, I'd have to agree.

This beer starts off well... it looks just like a stout should - black with a thick tan head that leaves some lace on the glass. The aroma was initially kind of off-putting... some chocolate and malt sweetness, but an aroma I couldn't quite place. The flavor was much the same... and the off flavor matched the aroma. After a few more sips, I finally identified the flavor - it tasted just like this horrible chocolate whey protien drink I used to have a few years ago when I was trying to look like a weightlifter (an experiment that failed miserably.) Although the beer had a good moutfeel, smooth and creamy, with a bit of a dry finish... I just couldn't get over the strange flavor that dominates the beer.

It's quite possible that I had a beer that was from a bad batch... maybe I should try this one again... but this was without a doubt the worst stout I've tried. This is one I couldn't even finish.

From a sampler: Very dark brown color with virtually no head to speak of. Somewhat thin lacing. The aroma is lightly roasty coffee. Smooth body, with a bit of coffee flavor with the same filmy, almost soapy aftertaste as in the bottled version but not nearly as bad. Still, I would not have bothered with this again had it not been part of the sampler.

Shiny, clear, dark brown if not black, especially in the middle. There are some ruby influences around the edges even if its not held to a light. A lack of a shapely head is disappointing as it makes this stout look very lifeless. On a harder than normal pour a head of a mere sliver formed, barely enough to cover the liquid. Quickly this cap faded to a slight collar. Subsequent lacing was spotty. I am little disappointed about the appearance beyond the color. The nose is reminiscent of a dry stout but there is a caramely sweetness that seems misplaced. If nothing else it is too loud, couple this with the fact the roasty qualities are barely noticeable. I only get a trace of coffee. The bouquet is muddled but in the end it comes out somewhat tolerable. The low potency curbs the aromas but not enough for me to call it inviting. I was not compelled to drink. The palate is less sweet and caramely than the nose indicated, which is a good thing. This sickly sweet combination doesn’t find a home until the finish and then it lingers into the aftertaste. Unpleasant. Upfront is a very weak roasty-coffee taste that empties out by the middle. Middling hops. I don’t care for this one at all. It doesn’t help matters that the carbonation is very low and the feeling in the mouth is identical to water. This is a poor stout… I mean drain pour stout. It is not worth drinking. My Dad brought this back as part of a sampler six-pack. Thanks for the effort Dad!

This stout is described on the menu as "a dry, yet surprisingly smooth version of a traditional Irish Stout. A complex blend of six types of barley and oatmeal create a complex flavor profile and rich mouth-feel." An odd description since dry Irish Stouts should be smooth, and since traditional dry Irish Stouts do not contain oatmeal.

Anyway, this stout pours black-brown with tan foam that leaves good lace on the glass. The smell is mild but is mostly dark malt. The taste is dominated by dark malt but with some coffee and toffee overtones, and a mild sweetness. The hop flavor is minimal, and there is a hint of oatmeal in the finish. The mouthfeel is clean and mostly dry, but with a sweetness in the aftertaste. The body is moderate. The drinkability is very good. This is one of the better offerings at the Monte Carlo.

This stout poured a very deep, dark amber brown with a very longlasting, lacy head. The aroma wa very flowery and hoppy. The taste was of sweet maly and slightly chocolate. The mouthfeel was moderate with a moderate creaminess and was not up to style. This is a good drinkable sweet stout. It is not overpowering in any judging catagory. It would make a good session stout.

Pours very dark brown, almost black, in color with only a trace amount of a tan head that quickly fades away. Nose is a light aroma of roasted coffee beans. The body was a bit thinner than I was expecting and the amount of carbonation is minimal. Taste begins with roasted malts followed by notes of espresso leaving a dry finish. I’ve been to the Monte Carlo Casio Pub many times but never knew before that they bottled their beer as well. Overall, a decent stout here but nothing too special.

Fully opaque blackness, with a slim brown head above.
Aroma, roasty, toasty, bittersweet, espresso tones, rich and warm, nice start for any stout.
Taste: handily fills the mouth, and blankets the senses with flavors of molasses, dark rum, charcoal, and coffee. Very tasty. Medium to full in body, with a sweet finish, ultimately drying, and quite delicious.
Not a terribly complex stout, but a solid one. Excellent texture, terrifically well-rounded.
Can't find a fault with this stout, and enjoyed every last drop!
Very nice, i'd be happy to find this in my company when I stumble into Sin City.

Perfect? No, definitely not. But this is a solid stout that will not fail to satisfy. Very dark in appearance, the beer has a fabulous aroma and a chocolatey/coffee taste to boot. Very smooth in its mouthfeel, I found it to be a beer I could drink all night. No complaints about this beer and one I will seek out next time I am in Vegas.

A great place to hang and get some good beer in Vegas. I tried the stout this time around and loved it. It was your typical opaque stout where no light could get through if it tried, had a nice frothy brown head on it and left great lace down the glass. The smell was of light toffee and coffee. The taste and mouthfeel reminded me a bit of Guinness, but with way more flavor. It had much more roasted coffee notes and a light smokiness to it that really complemented it. The light mouthfeel would have allowed me to drink it all night long, but I still had to stumble back to my room ya know! Anyways this one is definantly recommedned.

This stout is black with brown highlights. It has a dense tan head.

The nose is of toasted and smoked malts with a hint of coffee.

The taste is of roasted malts with a bit of bitter dark chocolate. There is also a bit of coffee taste that emerges late. Nice dry finish.

The mouth is sturdy and this beer is very quaffable. The best of the Monte Carlo beers I tried.

Poured a black color with a thin off-white colored head. Little lacing was produced. The aroma is pleasant as a slight roastiness is detected. The flavor is mostly roasted malts with some lightly detectable coffee, oats, and chocolate tones.

This stout produced a creamy mouthfeel with a slight dryness on the tongue. The flavors seemed to ride the tongue for a short bit after swallowing. Definitely MC's most flavorful offering, even though the body is a little light for an irish stout.

The best this brewpub has to offer. Pours a dark black with cream mocha head that is quite impressive. The smell is of distant coffee aromas and thick milk chocolate, roasted grain is very present. The taste is smooth and refreshing like a whipped cream chocolate shake, the slight creamines is a pleasure, milk stout. Full bodied and delicious, must try this.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a bid bubbly dark brown head with average retention. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee is dominant and very interesting overall. Taste is dominated by slightly bitter malt with long coffee finish. Body is about average and carbonation is a bit too lively for the style. Bottle was drank at close to room temperature, which really powered the coffee side of this beer. I thought this beer was very enjoyable overall.

Roasty aroma, but otherwise unexceptional Irish stout. Dry finish, more sour and burnt than full mouth feel. Passable, and several did. Hey it had a good dark jet black colour. Hard to get this state out here, so thanks IPFreely. Radekfest 05 Number 17.

Presentation: 12 oz. Dark bottle with a simple brown label containing no freshness date. Served slightly too cold from a cutie in a small skirt next to both the craps table and in the poker room.

The smell and appearance were the same for the bottle as the draft. The drinkability and flavor were much better with the bottle vs. the draft. Since there was no freshness date, I can only assume that the bottle aged a bit. The flavors were more complex, with some nice toffee caramel thrown in, and there was none of the sour lactose finish that I detected with the draft. The bottle also seemed more full bodied and carbonated. Well worth a few. I had at least four during a late night Texas Hold’em match.

Overall: The best of the Monte Carlo microbrews that I tried in a bottle. It should be noted, since they don’t advertise it, that the microbrew beers are available for free while you are gambling. (Always remember to tip the ladies if you expect to have any more than one…) I forgot to buy some to take home, so I don’t know how much they cost at the brewery. They were attempting to sell singles for $3 a bottle at the one store in-house.

Appearance: Dark black with a creamy head and a nice lacing on the glass as it is consumed.

Smell: The aroma is very light with caramel and chocolate malt aromas with some roastiness.

Taste: Roasty and sour with coffee, toast and a almond-like nuttiness. Cotton and soy sauce as well. Decent, but not a very compelling or interesting flavor.

Mouthfeel: Thin even for an Irish dry stout. Medium to light body just doesn't cut it.

Drinkability: I won't be rushing back for this one. Nothing particularly special.

Tap sample at the brewery. Black in colour with an off white head and low carbonation. Smells of milk chocolate and just a bit of roasted barley. More milk chocolate on the mouth, along with hints of coffee and red grapes. Watery and sweet palate. Not a bad session stout, but it would be better if it was a bit dryer.

The best Monte Carlo brew I have tried so far. Had the Light, Pale Ale and Wheat at the Brew Pub. Tried the Amber Ale from the mixed 6 pack I brought home. The Stout pours a dense Black color with no light showing through. Thick tan head and fairly good lacing. Aroma was fairly mild malt. The taste was good and surprisingly smooth. Nicely balanced malt taste with a little bitterness in the finish. I am a total hop head and find some malty tasting beers a bit chalky in the finish. This beer was good from beginning to end. The mouthfeel was good, not real rich but not watery either. (I am still having to get over the stereotype that stouts are thick and rich). Drinkability was excellent. This would be a good beer for a session.

Pours a dark black with a big, beautiful brown head that has very good lasting power.

Aroma of coffee and roasted malts.

Taste was of bitter coffee and burnt roasted malts. Some sweetness. Overall, it needed more punch.

Mouthfeel was light, ligh bodied. Not much going on.

Overall, very drinkable. Goes down easy due to it being very light and smooth. Decent enough.
