Now, this was my kind of place! It was original Firehall No. 3, opened in 1911, closed in 1958, and renovated in 1992. Can you say Rapid City, SD?
As I approached, it looked like a fire station with a wide front that included a patio left-facing windows like a roll-up door, the entry, and another set of windows extreme right facing. Entering, the dark wood "I"-shaped bar was left, tables and chairs were right up a pair of steps, and carpeted stairwell up to the second floor was center with the Men's to the right of the stairs. Having secured permission to wander, I headed up, where I discovered a second floor landing with a few tables and chairs and another stairwell up to the third floor with its own bar, a DJ station, and windows with a great view of the patio and 11th street. The pressed tin ceilings, the light fixtures, and the vintage fire equipment were all evocative of the Victorian Era. Turning left past the end of the bar was an area with a raised snug and a green-felt pool table, plus the patio entry.
Beer: On my visit, their only house-brewed beer was their British Cerveza, a sort of Mexican-style lager. Not bad, but not earth-shaking, either.
Mom: Maybe for the aesthetics.
