3 cl. bottle @ home. Procured from Willems. Bottled on 03/2013. Ruby very dark brown with fizzing away beige head. Smell is very grainy, cocoa powder, grainy chocolate, roast & something off, metallic, liquorish, something fermenting spoiled,… Taste is bitter grainy chocolate, high carb, thin metallic, thick liquorish, old chocolate, huge sweet banana, overripe, touch metals, touch honey, light minerals in the back,… Grainy cocoa & too high carb. Ah, messed up stout.

THis is a funny beer, sour and sweet together. I bought this bottle in the Bierloods in Adegem if i am correct. Best before februari 2011. Mwoh, a it over date. Dark fluid and a two finger head with millions of bubbles. Nice.

Light sour smell and the taste is light sweet. There is very little body in this beer and that is a pity because it would certainly score higher. Aftertaste is not very special.

This review is for the Stoute Bie from Brouwerij De Bie. Poured from a 33 cl bottle into a chalice and sampled on June 17, 2010. After being in Belgium for about 5 months, it was nice to see a stout, and I was very excited about bringing this one back (from a beer store called ABS Drinks in Winksele). After bringing it back, I noticed that it is labeled as a brown beer both on the website and the bottle. The brewery website describes this as a brown beer with a body that is "sweet and vibrant." This beer's body is more like a stout than a brown beer. It pours an opaque golden black coffee, with a vigorous frothy head that reminded me of slightly reddish cappuccino cream. This subsides within about 10-15 minutes, and then a thin golden layer remains, and gives way to an un-stout like aroma. On first sip (the beer was served out of the fridge) the beer is overwhelmingly sweet, it tastes of honey and molasses. It has a thick mouth feel that is reminiscent of a hard candy aftertaste, not a particular taste I enjoy in beers. As the beer warmed (their remained about a 1/8" head) it was smoother, but the flavors opened up to licorice, rum, and sugar. The spices are masked by the overwhelming character of the sweetness.

If you can get over the sweetness and the fact that this beer is brewed like a brown ale, but presents itself like a dessert stout, you might stick around long enough to realize that it can be paired with a fine bitter dark chocolate, ice cream, or fresh strawberries. I think one bottle could easily be split into 3 or 4 small servings as a dessert beer. Although this is labeled as being in the category of milk stout/sweet stouts, it is not labeled as one on the bottle, and I am inclined to think that the low reviews reflect this. If you have ventured into enjoying and sampling the quadruple styles, this may not disappoint as much as the reviews reflect.

On first pouring this beer, it looked like it had potential - deep, dark ruby-black color with a maroon-colored head, lively but settled quickly. The aroma was pure caramel, not much else - first sign of trouble. The taste was so incredibly sweet that none of the reviewers could finish it. Nothing to balance the sweetness. Best skipped.

My initial pour was into a Guinness glass and resulted in the biggest head I've ever seen, almost completely head, no beer. Poured nearly black with a head that eventually was quite rocky and clumpy.

Aroma was sour, with sweet malt sugar notes, no hop profile, soy sauce

Taste: To me this beer was undrinkable, and my fiancee agreed; very overly sweet and sugary, maple candy, sugar, and with a sour soy sauce flavour that came to mind.

Had a bottle in some town near Ghent. This is certainly not a normal stout, but by Belgian stout standards, it fits in fine. There's a big, big sweetness to this beer with almost no roast. Instead, very dark fruit flavors, like raisins and dates - nothing juicy - dominate with a bit of Belgian spice. Interesting beer and worth a try.

Pours black with a nearly brown head. Smells quite sweet. No bitterness, no roasted malt, no alcohol, just sweet fruitiness. Taste is just bad. The smell doesn't even come close to betraying just how sweet this is. Kind of ferric. Like a Hawaiian Punch stout. Light body, though the head is nice and creamy. Down the drain it goes...

Got this beer at the foreign beer bar, Catford Beerfest., 08/06/06. Coming in a 330ml slim brown bottle, bottle-conditioned. BB Nov. 2006, served cool in a large Burgundy bulb wine glass.

A: black hue, coming with deeply-dark brown foamy dissipating lively carbonation.
S: sweet, rough, grist-like dark malts, a little hint of licorice, very faintly sweet coffee, barley-candy, and slightly metallic... I've struggled to come up with these notes, and I'm sure my smelling sense is not too bad today. So, why is it so bland and flat?
T: very very sweet, brown sugary, almost artificial sweetness like aspartame; metallic, dark malts, sweetened boiled chestnuts, and slightly berry-fruity hints, leaving a little spiciness in the very end. No bitterness is shown whatsoever, nor is the supposedly-pronounced roastiness. I've got nothing to say about the flavour, and feel rather let down. It's ultra-simplistic, thin, and simply suffers (not benefits) from too much sugar in the beer which makes it not even like a normal sweet stout, but like a dark malty wort, or malt drink.
M&D: thin-bodied and the flavour doesn't have a clear theme or, as I'd put it, a gravity, although the carbonation status is quite healthy. Failing to live up to the usual standards of this nice microbrewery, this is by far one of very few surprisingly disappointing Belgian beers I've ever come across. I suppose the brewery still masters in what it does the best, i.e. Belgian ales--just leave stouts to the British, shall we? NOT recommended, at all.
