Oddly strong for the style. It pours a dark brown with low effervescence.
Smells tame, but mildly alcoholic. No real hint of pumpkin spices: just some bread and lightly astringent booze.
Tastes sharp and boozy--not very good, but nothing offputting. It has only the faintest wisps of pie spice that typify most American pumpkin ales. It finishes sweet.
I really have no idea what they were going for here, but I don't think they achieved. Whatever their goal was, this is a truly odd beer--the marzen I had beforehand (which is usually more difficult to brew), was completely solid, and it had much more of a spice profile than the pumpkin ale. This is like a low-hoped pale ale that had some pumpkin added to the mash. The result is a boozy ale that's not particularly flavorful.
