A - Poured a dark copper color with a tan head that leaves lacing behind

S - Is mostly of sweet malt with mild hops

T - Like the smell sweet malt upfront with some hops and an alcohol finish

M - This beer has a medium body with medium carbonation to it

O - Overall this is a pretty good Barleywine I enjoyed the the flavor and it was pretty easy to drink worth a try if you see it

Note: This beer is NOT retired. I purchased a fresh bottle straight from the brewery March 2011.

This offering, fresh from Brew It Up, pours a cloudy chestnut brown. The head, retention, and lace were really pretty impressive considering the style.

The aroma oozing from this one is beautiful. The sweetness is very complex and is held in check by slight dry bitterness. Brown sugar, fig, ripe banana, and fleeting whiffs of milk chocolate become more and more prominent. 10% Alcohol is what the bottle claims, you wouldn't know it from the aroma. Wolf in sheep's clothing.

The flavor is fantastic. Take the aforementioned flavors of the nose and add a substantial hop bitterness, awesome. The flavor is bold and balanced perfectly. The sweet flavors in the beginning fill the mouth with kindness before hops break in and inject a no BS load of dry earthy hops to stir the pot. Once again, alcohol wins at hide'n'seek because I haven't a clue where it's at.

The body is around medium, but has a light fluffy feel to it. The carbonation is mild and intrudes no more than adding the designated crispness. The finish is dry and begs for another drink.

This is a fantastic beer, perhaps the best barleywine I've tasted. The flavors are fantastic, it's bold, drinkable, and hits on every note. It's a sleeper too, goin' down dangerously fast.

This is very light in color for a barleywine. Its almost orange and slightly hazy but not too bad. There is some off white head that laces the glass.

The smell is quite strong. Mostly malts, nothing real complex. Very simple and nice. Not a lot in the way of hop aroma but there is enough to know its going to be bitter. Also a touch of alcohol in the nose.

The taste is bitter but also very traditional. Its nice to see an american barleywine that can somewhat stick to tradition. Very sweet and malty, moderately alcoholic, and very bitter. The malt tasted partially aged, borderline oxidized. Can't tell if this beer is old and was just that bitter when it was made or if its new and they found some other way to get that aged flavor.

The body is heavy and smooth but you have to be prepared for a bitter beer. Its still cold enough in northern Ca to enjoy a beer like this properly.
