On tap in a 10oz snifter at the brewpub on 3/8/11
Dark brown; pretty much black. Just under one finger of foam. The head thins but leaves good lace. Skimmy retention, solid lace.
Lots of roast in the aroma. Roasted coffee, unsweetened chocolate. Some earthiness and hints of nuts. Notions of lighter sugars - perhaps caramel or some toffee.
Plenty of roastiness greets the palate but it's more tangy than dry. Coffee, muddled chocolate, dark fruit. Fairly dry throughout with a lingering tartness. Tastes a bit off.
Feel is a shade lighter than full bodied. Really smooth, save for a rolling granular presence. Finishes roasty.
This isn't anything spectacular but it's a serviceable imperial stout. Doesn't seem too boozy, either.

Picked up a bottle at the brewpub, $4.50. Pours black and tar-like, as advertised. Nice solid creamy brown head. Smells absolutely fantastic, which surprises the hell out of me, considering how mediocre the beer on tap at the brewpub were. Very fruity on the nose, maraschino cherries, strawberries, earthy truffles, liquid chocolate, brandy. Taste at first is just a bit of a chocolate flavor, but it builds into a roasted, slightly burnt dark chocolate with cherry pancake syrup, strawberry ice cream, vanilla pods, charcoal. Really, im a bit stunned with respect to how tasty this is. A touch less than full bodied, almost a wee-bit thin. I really can't believe this comes from the same place i just visited. Really good, drinks well and very memorable.

Very black and murky, I believe that it's unfiltered. Plenty of dark brown head that remaians and laces the glass.
Smell is strong of dark chocolate. Some noticeable coffee too and a small hint of alchol.
The taste is dominated by the rich chocolate qualities and some roasted malts. Some hop bitternes but fairly subdued by the abv and malt flavors.
Overall this is a very rich beer but its relatively light in body. Definitely an interesting twist on the RIS style (though I'm not sure I'm qualified to judge as I've only tried 14 different ones to date). Quite drinkable.
