Only 3 or 4 blocks north of where I live lies the Pike Bar & Fish Grill, named after the old part of Long Beach now subsumed by the modern day Shoreline area. I have had a few Suarezs here over the last 8 months or so, but tonight was the first time I paid any real attention, well enough to scribe this BeerFly anyways. As I live right at the junction of Ocean Boulevard and Cherry Avenue, it takes me all of 10 minutes to walk the few blocks North up Cherry, then when you get to 4th, hook a left and walk West for a short while. After about 30 seconds, look up and to your left. You know you are at the Pike when you see the large green wide-eyed Octopus sitting atop the word Pike in large yellow letters against a dark blue sign which towers above the Bar itself, its hard to miss.
I arranged to meet up with fellow BA Seagoat and his Fishing Boat Buddies here tonight. The entrance is on the corner of this neighborhood bar which specializes in serving a small range of fresh seafood offerings and a smaller but discerning range of beers to the locals. It is not a Restaurant, but is most definitely a Bar.
Inside the bar is kind of C-shaped. To your left lies the small Kitchen which is visible through a serving hatch. The bar is in front of you, but to your left and in the middle of the single room as you enter. Something like 10-12 tall red stools front the bar which is pleasant enough and simple in nature. The room curves round behind the bar and leads to a seating area that has additional Tables and Chairs. This also leads to the Fire Exit door that takes you back outside and leads you to the two doors that are the access ways to the restrooms which are extremely clean and tidy, they pass the would I take a dump here test with flying colors. An old 70's Wurlitzer Juke Box is just to your right as you enter and has some Sex Pistols tunes, whilst the decor includes Long Beach signs and pictures of aquatic life and the original Pike area.
The beer range would barely rate an average in quantity, but what I like about the beer range here, is that some obvious thought has been put into it which at the end of the day is all that matters to me regardless of quantity, and this alone deserves a listing in the BA BeerFly. 5 Taps, serve the ubiquitous Coors Lite, the not so often seen Pabst Blue Ribbon (which seems like to be a Long Beach Neighborhood Bar favorite for some reason), Newcastle Brown Ale with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Spaten Franziskaner Hefe bringing up the rear. In addition, a double glass-doored Cooler holds a stock of an additional 20 bottled beers. Most notably it restrains Stone IPA and Arrogant Bastard Ale, Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout and Winter Welcome, Lindemans Framboise (750ml only), Pyramid Hefe, Hopf Hefeweizen from Germany plus a smattering of more regular macro beers including Tecate, Guinness, Bass Pale Ale, Heineken, Corona, Pacifico, Bud, Bud Lite, Miller Lite, Michelob and MGD bringing up the rear quite literally.
As the name implies, Seafood is served here, and forms the basis for 90% of the offerings on the Bar menu. As I mentioned earlier, this is not a Restaurant but a small Bar that serves a nice range of Seafood to accompany the well chosen beer range, which works really well.
The world is not full of beer geeks, thank goodness, but this Bar cleverly appeals to those that wish to down a quality beer, as well as those that still want to imbibe PBR. It caters for both groups, which adds to the Pikes charm. Since I first came here, I have noticed a distinct 'upward' shift in the beer range. In conjunction with the nearby Beer & Liquor Store Morrys of Naples, it also holds the occasional Beer Tasting nights, for which it is to be applauded. It gets an "A+" for effort.
Basically it gets better every time I come here, something extra appears. A small locals bar that is making a real effort on the beer front but which is still in the early stages of evolution. Sure, its a limited range, but it is slowly improving and the consideration is there, which at the end of the day, is what really matters - and it makes the Pike more than deserving of this BeerFly entry and a visit if you are in the area. The Shrimp Taco Plate with a Stone IPA is well recommended!
