Cask at the GBBF 2008, hand pump / beer engine. Black colour, dark reddish brown in the highlights, low head. A moderate nuttiness in the aroma, hints of mild coffee. The flavour is smooth with a slight roastiness and some nutty notes.

Bottled but this is the none bottle conditioned version so doesn't have the body or flavour depth of tgat but still presents itself as a good quality dark mild

A 500ml bottle with a BB of July 2013. ABV is stated as 3.9%. Picked up from a supermarket a while back. I'm pretty certain this is the beer that used to be called 'Very Nutty Black', as Thwaites have recently undergone a brand/product overhaul (basically it's a slightly stronger version of Nutty Black). Described on the label as a dark mild, and conditioned with live yeast.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. A dark ruby-brown hue that appears black unless held to the light. Good carbonation visible near the sides. Produces a huge head of frothy beige foam with excellent retention; this eventually settles as a thick surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of faint roasted malt with mild hints of caramel, nuttiness, fruity ale yeast and a slight sweetness. A touch of earthiness in the background. Subtle and underwhelming.
Tastes of mild dark malt with a dry finish. Notes of faint roasted grain, caramel, fruity ale yeast, a hint of dried fruit and weak stewed leaves. Well-attenuated and slightly earthy, followed by a delicate bitterness upon swallowing. As expected, no hop character to speak of. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and decent body - though it could be a bit creamier. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of dry, earthy yeast and stewed leaves/cardboard.
Drinkable but rather average. It looks superb with a towering head, however it's all downhill from there. The aroma and flavour are dull and lacklustre, with weak malt character and little else going on. Body is OK but not amazing. If a mild is judged by it's maltiness then this one is below par. Goes down easily enough but nothing special - no need to seek it out.

500ml bottle from Home Bargains (£1.39):
Dark mahogany to black with a very large, three inch tall head that gradually increases in size once poured and was left overflowing the glass after even a light pour. The head is light brown and foamy with good retention.
Darker, roasted malts and some coffee with a hint of nut as the name would suggest plus a little chocolate. There wasn't a lot going on with this one but I also detected some sugary sweetness towards the end.
Roasted malts and some chocolate with a little toffee but the nuttiness from the smell is not noticeable in the taste to me. There is a few earthy flavours and a hint of darker fruits too.
Smooth & creamy with a light medium body and a nice touch of bitterness and light carbonation and some sweetness at the end with a slightly dry finish.
A solid effort from Thwaites, the flavours were enjoyable but a little subdued and didn't really grab your attention. The mouthfeel was good however and the alcohol content was just right making it an easy beer to drink.

500ml Bottled conditioned: shared with a mate on 15 Feb 2013 during a random beer tasting evening.
Looked fine: really dark, almost black like its name. good full tan coloured head of foam sat on each half-pint glasses.
The smell was weaker than I expected: notes of dark chocolate and coffee, but not overly strong.
The taste a more roundly roasted, malty feel than the aroma hinted at. Not as sweet either, semi-bitter maybe.
The body was OK to thin: thin when looking at the colouring but OK if you are thinking about the the 3.9% ABV the bottle has (0.6% more than the cask version).
All in all, not bad.
