Coming in a 500ml brown bottle, filtered and pasteurised. BB 01/06/2008, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass. I suspect it is related to the contract-brew "Strong Brown Ale" for the Co-op supermarket, but I'm not sure.
A: coming in a dark brown colour with reddish glows; the fluffy beige head comes a bit dirty and settles fast to a thin blanket; moderate carbonation.
S: like a premium bitter, the aroma has plenty of dark fruit-like lively hoppiness, raisins, nutty malts, and a pronounced but not overly thick layer of cara-malts at the back. All elements are well mixed, but not to the point of being sophisticated.
T: lightly-textured but sweet upfront, with a whiff of Dark Mild-like brown-sugary maltiness plus a Chinese-grass-jelly-like herbal touch, then the liquidy dark-fruits (esp. dried longan-fruits) quickly follow up and expand on the palate... leading towards a faintly dry, tea-leafy & herbal bitter-sweet finish with a hint of smoked berry-fruits.
M&D: it tastes like a sweeter and stronger Dark Mild to me, with a sound yet mild bitterness to boot at the back. I would argue that the body is slightly too light to support the taste, but it doesn't downgrade the overall performance of this brown ale in being a reasonably tasty brew.
