So back before any of their other double ipas came to be, they (JJJ/Morgan) dropped this one at the Bistro 2006 Double IPA festival. Kind of the prototype for them, at the time.
Poured a dark orange/amber color with 1/3" white head. Aroma of mostly caramel and bittering hops. EJ Phair was kinda into the English ipa thing last time I had their ipas/pale ales, and this one, while not an English ipa, was entirely about the bittering hops that provided the well known and utilized grapefruit/tree combo in both aroma and taste.
Taste was plenty bitter hitting the 81 ibu mark. I must say, maybe it was having one of the lower abv's of the day, but this did a good job covering up the alcohol in the mouth feel. Sometimes tough to do with a sizeably bitter beer. All in all it was a good beer, and I figure it was one that led to the development of a lot of their newer hoppy beers down the line. They should come back to the festival, haven't seen 'em in years.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
