12 oz bottle poured into pint glass, bottled on 7/7/2014, so not a fresh bottle.
A: hazy deep orange golden and slight cloudy, one finger white foam head, some carbonation
S: citrus fruits, orange, grapefruit peel, lemon, Belgian yeast, slight boozy aroma
M: medium body with some malt resin on tongue
T: grapefruit rind, citrus fruits, lemon, hints of Belgian yeast, slight sweetness, malty, piney resin in the finish
O: good brew, would like to try a fresh batch to see if there is a difference.

Pours a hazy pale amber producing little more than a finger of off-white, frothy, shortlived head that leaves a thin wash of lace. Aroma is yeasty peach & pear fruit esters in a malty background of pie crust & biscuit with hops manifesting as orange, lemon/lime zest notes & ) pineapple herbal/floral hints. Taste is resinous pine, tangerine & pineapple hop hints with cloves, spice, alcohol & biscuit malts, with a caramel candy apple & honey undertone. What sweetness there is declines in the finish & transitions more to pine resin & citrus pith with the bitterness dominating & lasting long in the dry aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation, a little prickly but yet smooth & coating on the tongue with a moderate & lasting astringency.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into snifter. No bottle date to be found,
A: Pours a cloudy golden yellow with one finger off white head that settles quickly. Heavy lacing.
S: Tart citrus mixed with yeast esters. Faint sweet caramel malts. Pears and apples.
T: Lemon, orange peel, grapefruit. Biscuits drizzled with honey. Ripe pears.
M: Medium body and average carbonation.
O: Not sure what to do with this one. Not enough hop bite for a proper IPA. Not enough prominent Belgian yeast. Very different fruit flavors. Interesting brew, but not something I would frequent.

No label information. Brother Leo is brewed in the style of a Belgian Style India Pale Ale. Available in 12 oz. bottled 4 packs and on limited draft as part of the Brick Mason series. Released summer 2014.
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Brick Mason snifter. Served above 49º Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a frothy foam ecru-white head over a densely hazy golden amber body. Retention is good, lacing is light and spotty. 3.75
(Smell) A potent blending of herbaceous, earthy and musty citrus hops with a mild caramel bread body, some mild Belgian yeast-borne earthiness and floral characters. The potency is medium/high. 3.75
(Taste) Flavors of yeasty caramel biscuit with a reserved sweetness, mild grain alcohol, some lemony, peppery and spicy hop notes in the midsection, finishes clean on a lingering herbal and earthy hop track with a mild bitterness. 3.5
(Mouthfeel) The texture is smooth, mildly chewy and lightly dry. Carbonation generates a smooth frothiness for a silky, soft mouthfeel. Body is medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is mildly bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is medium and there are no notable off characters. 3.5
(Overall) A respectable take on the style in a low-profile release. A nice hoppy profile of the lesser utilized spicy, herbal and peppery hop flavors pair well with the yeasty, biscuity malt profile. Both the Belgian and IPA characters are evident in this beer. Collectively, Brother Leo is a bit milder mannered than I expected as per the style. Regardless, it's a decent ale. 3.75
