Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, near black body with an initial upsurge of tanned suds, but it dissipates quickly.
Smell: Roasty yet oily coffee beans, dark chocolaty malts. Baked brown sugar, toasted coconut, bourbon glaze. Gives an impression of a Mounds bar.
Taste: The Whale is roasty, toasty and gives a big pop of initial sweetness, sugarying up notes of bourbon syrup, toasted coconut, chocolate and coffee. Sweetness holds onto the tongue as in come touches of Buffalo Trace coast by. A little banter from the alcohol, a little hint of woodsiness, but it stays sweet through the smooth, soft finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Lightly carbonated.
Overall: Pretty solid, might prefer a bit fuller in the mouthfeel, maybe just a skosh less sweet.

Best beer from RB I have had in quite some time. Nice lacing on the glass with low carb, the smell comes on strong with bourbon, coconut, and coffee. Each flavor shines through on the palate equally. Really nice beer.
