Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle. No vintage date but I believe is from 2015.

A: Raisin-garnet with short cap of light beige head which falls quickly and leaves no lacing.

S: Huge malty aroma with mellow alcohol. A lot of raisin date, and medium caramel.

T: Maltiness brings raisin, date, medium caramel, and dark chocolate, slightly leathery in character with a pretty hefty dose of slightly bitter but not unpleasant alcohol. Hops provide countering moderate bitterness. Reminded me of SN Bigfoot until the bitter alcohol and low hopping was noted.

M: Big and heavy, not terribly drinkable with thick finish and some cloying sweetness that doesn't really go anywhere.

O: I thought mellowing time would help and it did but it still has a ways to go. Thanks to good friend Erinn for the bottle.

Red Brick Old Stock Ale (purchased at Matherne’s in Laplace, La.) has a very thick, frothy, beige head, a somewhat murky, caramel-brown appearance, some tight bubble streams, and lots of sediment floating about, especially after swishing the bottom of the bottle. Lacing is thick and heavy. The aroma is of dank, old (this bottle is about three years old), bready ale. Maybe, some orange sweetness. Taste is of brown bread crust, sharp, yet not harsh, bitterness, orange, a shade of licorice, and some sourness. Mouthfeel is medium, and Red Brick Old Stock Ale finishes semi-dry, belchy, and rather easy drinking (for such a high abv).

A 12 oz bottle, with no bottled on or drink by date on it..so not real sure how old it is

A - Cloudy orange/brown with 1 full finger of head and lots of lace left in the glass

S - Smells like a sour! A brown sour beer..thats about all I am getting. Smells great

T - Like the smell, tastes like a sour strong ale. Brown sugar, a faint sweetness. Not much hop action going on that I can tell

M - Full bodied and well carbonated

O - A very good strong ale! Almost a sour strong ale. Well done..

Red Brick's Old Stock Ale is brewed in the style of an Old/Stock Ale. This is Red Brick's third entry into their inaugural Brick Mason series 2011. There is no label information nor bottle date.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to my Brick Mason Snifter. Served above 56º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Crispy copper biscuity head of a light frothy consistency. Body is a heavily hazed copper-brown hue. Carbonation is spritely and plentiful. Head quality is worthy of more. 3.25

(Smell) Potency of tart red grapes, acidic soured grain, vinous alcohol. Much less malt body than I'm used to for old ales, and what is there is doughy and soured. Very funky, fruity and chock full of esters with a sharp vinous, semi-dry aroma. The aroma is lacking focus and clarity. The aroma is swinging in the direction of infected beers, very muddy and funky. It's likely to be more offensive than not. 2.5

(Taste) Reminiscent of a malty Belgian Dubbel with a load of fruity esters, sour tartness. amongst a notable handful of brown candied sugar and some lightly toasted sourdough malt contribute a modest sweetness and body to enhance the body and better balance the flavor profile. Oak provides a subtle dryness and little flavor change. Mild fruity character of cherry and figs are notable throughout and the beer finishes with a sharp tart grape ester- some mild wine comparisons are evident. Infection is still highly possible- there's a slightly better composition than in the aroma in regards to off-characters, but it's still not likely to fall into people's liking, as it's neither pleasantly sour nor robustly full-flavored. It's seemingly uncommitted to an agreeable flavor profile. 3

(Mouthfeel) Very mellow malt thickness with some residual sweetness, a touch of slickness and a medium dry, lightly tart finish with a lingering fruit ester note. Quite boozy without an equally bold malt body nor yeast depth grants a medium/high alcohol presence. Body is light/medium for the style, medium+ overall. The carbonation works for what this beer has become, but not likely what it would have started from. 3.5

(Overall) A mildly boozy but overall tart, funky and fruity old ale with a lesser malt presence and residual sweetness than most Old ales are known for. Some slight sourness is to be expected, but even that reaches only a fraction of its potential, suggesting infection more than intention. Despite some notable wine-like characteristics, the hint of sourness doesn't really pull its own weight either, and what is left is seemingly some unfocused doughy wine-beer experiment, or at the very best a half-hearted and confused Belgian Dubbel. I would have preferred something with a bolder malt body and character. This beer in particular seems to be all over the place without any particular intended direction in mind. I feel for the blind shopper who picks these up on sale at some seedy package store. Even on a steep markdown, they're well past their prime, or worse- potentially infected. I think Red Brick recognized quality control issues from their Brick Mason 2011 series and that's why they rebooted the series anew in 2012 to better reviews. 3.25

There is something off with this beer in that it tastes like a Flanders ale. That woody, fruity, cherry thing. It's definitely not old ale, to me. Just too fruity and tangy. I mean I still do like the flavor profile and it's a nice beer for sure. But an old ale it is not. Maybe this got infected? Regardless, just do the same thing again and call it a Flanders red ale and you've got a winner! Problem solved.

A - Pours with two fingers of off-white foam on top of a hazy, dark amber-brown body. The head fades away slowly and leaves nice lace on the glass.

S - Some slightly dark fruit with notes of cherry and vanilla as well as a touch of toasted oak.

T - Thick, sweet malt up front. Some caramel and tartness in the middle with a finish of toffee, light herbal hops, and lingering grainy sweetness.

M - A thick body, moderately high carbonation, and a sweet finish.

D - I was afraid that this was going to be infected, based on previous experiences with Red Brick products, but that doesn't seem to be an issue. Unfortunately, while it isn't infected, it is kind of bland and flabby. The malt is one dimensional and there really isn't much else going on. A little age might help.

12 oz bottle served in a snifter.

Pours a cloudy orange-brown with more than 1 finger of thick tan head. The head is durable, but turns a less appealing chunky with reduction.

Has the aroma of an oak-aged sour ale with a good bit of malt and a hint of spruce. Higher ABV becomes more evident with warming.

T: Plenty of oak flavoring; really too much of it for my tastes and too much given the strength of the other flavor components. Those other components include a bit of prune and over-ripe dark fruit, yeast, and a hint of charcoal. Starts sweet but ends sour. Both sour and bitter components linger on in the aftertaste.

M: Medium-full body; good carbonation; creamy smooth.

O: I approached this with trepidation, having opened a bottle just a few days earlier that I suspected had gone bad. It was a drain pour. This was much better but still a little challenging, in part due to the resemblance to the spoiled bottle. Eventually, it proved to be interesting and near enjoyable, if a bit too sour for my taste.
