Caramel Brown

Had this from a can that I picked up from the local Konbini (Convenience Store). Poured into a miniature hefe glass (Everything is tinier in Japan haha)

A: Nice looking, mildly dark caramel color that has a bit of an amber hue when held up to the light. Pours like most Nama beer - clean looking and carbonated with a tan head that recedes quickly to nothingness.

S:The smell is probably the only redeeming factor of this beer. Nice caramel malts, butterscotch, and candied sugars. Definitely smells like an American Brown, but it's very deceiving.

T: Pretty awful. Drinks like happoshu, and tastes mostly like happoshu. The flavor is all burnt butterscotch on the palate with an underlying soy taste that comes through slightly on the finish. Aftertaste is just bitter and dry. There's no complexity to this beer. It's almost like a glass of club soda with a stale butterscotch hard candy dissolved into it.

M: Strong carbonation on the tongue, but that quickly fades to reveal a watery, astringent consistency.

C: There's nothing great about this beer other than the smell, and the fact that it has more robust flavor than other macros available in Japan. Although, that flavor is all butterscotchy bitterness. Overall though, I can't recommend this over Suntory's Premium Malts, which is probably the best macro offering in Japan.
