I enjoyed the zwicklbier from this brewery so I am looking forward to trying out the pilsener. This pours a medium yellow color with a slight orange tint, a medium foamy white head, and a high amount of carbonation. The color is somewhat darker than the typical pilsener. The smell is typical pilsener all the way though: a little yeasty, some alcohol, a little acrid. The taste has all the typical pilsener qualities, but also some added grainy malts that make it taste a little like a more robust beer. The body is also a little heavier than the average pilsener. The finish is crisp, but somewhat acrid and leaves sort of a strange metallic, earthy taste in your mouth. I liked this beer with the exception of the odd aftertaste, which unfortunately deducts some points from it since I think finish is really important in a pilsener in particular. I have been drinking a lot of the Berlin pilseners lately and I have to say that despite the nice body on this pilsener I prefer some of the better Berlin pilseners overall. I think this brewery’s zwickl beer is also clearly superior.
