Had this tonight at the brewery/taproom. This beer was bottle-conditioned for 1 1/2 years and poured into a tulip glass.
Pours a nice mohagany color with basically no head. Nice color, but never heard of or seen such a dark tripel.
Smells immediately of molasses, and I love molasses. This is followed up by other sweet malty smells mixed with honey and alcohol.
Tastes - quite a bit of sweet molasses going on here, and I like that since I love molasses (as stated above). Basically everything in the smell is evident in the taste as well with nothing new added to the mix, besides maybe a bit of plain old sugar. So in addition there are malts, honey and EXTREMELY well-hidden alcohol. You really have to try to find it. Very low IBUs.
There is what I deemed to be an appropriate level of carbonation. for this beer. Wouldn't mind seeing just a bit more however- it might have added to the mouthfeel. Feels very "wet" on the palate with no dryness and almost no bitterness in the aftertaste.
Quite easy to drink for a beer commanding 9.5% (according to the bartender). The molasses made it really tastey and easy to drink. I had no problem guzzling the rest of this down as it was time to leave. So far my favorite beer from Three Needs, and one that everyone should check out if they are in the Burlington area and it is being offered.
