Once again sampled on tap at the brewery tap room. Monique poured this brew with little head (her fault?) but it was a nice amber color with red highlights. No retention or lacing (again, I suspect a poor pour). The aromas were of fresh grains and some sweet malts. The first flavor to hit my tongue was tangy bitterness of barley and hops followed by some sweet malts. The finish is again hoppy and provides a pleasant crispness that lingers on the tongue forever. It is well balanced but not particularly bold. A little light for a German style but still tastes distinctly German. Creamy mouthfeel and very, very smooth. Medium bodied well carbonated making it quite drinkable.

I first tried this beer in July, 2001 and was pleased to see it on my latest trip to Burlington (03/01/2003). I personally do not see too many beers of this style brewed in the US, nor have I sampled very many true Dorts (had a mini-keg of DAB years ago before I knew what I was tasting!). From what I have learned, I imagine it a delicate style that can be troubling for homebrewers to get just right (a cross between a pilsner and Munich helles)?
I was poured a slightly hazy, very light brownish beer with a 1/4-inch foam. The head did linger, though I managed to down this beer in my thirst rather quickly. Noted a fresh aroma -- like a true home-brew. It was neither an extra hoppy, alcoholic or malty smell, but somewhat grainy. Not sure if it fits the style. Its taste did meet expectations. Very fine balance between the malt and hops, as it would be classified as neither a true pils, not hoppy nor effervescent enough, nor was malty enough for a helles. Highest regard I had was that I noted the pleasurable ease it went down.
Although I do enjoy subtle-styled beers, I found it a bit difficult in all honesty to rate the taste of this one. Thus, I feel an above-average 3.5 fits at this time. I do hope to try another sample of this soon (will adjust my findings if applicable... as there were many other beers to sample, I limited to one my allotment).
