Thor’s Hammer is an unusual winter seasonal that doesn’t lend itself easily to established styles. It’s something of a copout to call this a winter warmer, but I’ll leave it at that. The beer’s stormy brown body draws it closer to a porter though it’s flavor is much fruitier and has both roasted elements and characteristics common to sherry wine. Its smell is a divine medley of golden raisin, vanilla bean, and Madeira wine. Yet the taste touches upon coffee and unsweetened chocolate. The bittering is complex, and the finish is strong and smoky.

Thor’s Hammer is a few shades shy of opaque. My pint was served with a thin head and produced nonchalant lace. This beer scores high marks for its originality and bold taste parameters. Recommended.
