Moylan's Imperial Stout
On draft aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels at The Avenue Pub, New Orleans, LA
Appearance: dark dark brown, small head, and good lacing.
Smell: bourbon sweetness and some malty chocolate.
Taste: coffee, chocolate, and bourbon.
Mouthfeel: thick, heavy, yet smooth.
Overall:
This is fantastic. The bourbon flavors are wonderful.

on-tap at The Nook. Part of a special Barrels of Fun with Denise from Moylan's
a- pours thick and pitch black. produced only the thinnest collar of light brown head.
s- highly roasted without seeming like straight coffee. a heavy oak/vanilla presence is a pleasant find paired with a subtle kick of bourbon
t- the first sip reveals a very well melded BA stout. everything is in exceptional balance. a great mix of roasted barley, big chocolate malt, oak, vanilla, a small amount of bourbon that mixes into the bitter and bready finish.
m- full bodied. very low carbonation. a nice thick creaminess. the slightest amount of warming from the bourbon/high ABV
d- a heavy imperial stout. great stuff that keeps you reaching for the glass but some in your face flavors will eventually slow you down. I could have had another glass of this with ease if it didn't cost $9 for a pour. it was a healthy 16oz pour, though.

I'm not much of a fan of liquor-tasting beer but I wanted to try this because of its aging in good solid oak whiskey barrels. I'm rating based upon the beer's quality and intent rather than my own subjective preferences.
A= very dark, little head or carbonation evident.
S= nice typical Imperial Stout scents, dry chocolate, coffee, burnt malts, some nice hops florals plus the very evident bourbon scents.
T= a bit flat compared to many other Russian Imperial's, very evident bourbon mixed with burnt malts, dark chocolates and dry coffee.
M= dry, with burnt chocolate/coffee and toasted malts, some hops bitters.
D= nicely drinkable if you like this style plus the bourbon addition, a bit strong at 10%ABV for more than one or two, and a bit trendy for more than that for me.

I can't believe I'm the first to review this one. Didn't realize it was new. Well glad to add a great beer to the BA list. Had this one on tap in Denver this past week.
Had it on tap and the beer came with a 2 finger medium brown head. This head has great retention. The beer itself was dirty motor oil in color. Almost black as night. Not too much lacing to speak of.
The aroma was amazing. Yes it smelled like a great bourbon. Deep and intoxicating. I have to admit I am coming to the realization that R.I.S.'s are approaching IPA's for my favorite style. This one certainly helped close the gap. These barrel aged ones are just awesome. This one in particular.
The flavor was deep, rich, smooth as silk and just fantastic. Chocolate notes, along with some coffee. You got a great sense of the barrel aging and it did remind you of a great whiskey.
Mouth feel was creamy and smooth. Almost milkshake like. So drinkable it was scary for a 10% ABV.
I will be looking for this in a bottle in the east coast. By far my favorite Moylan's item.
