The bottle-conditioned beer comes in a 500ml brown-bottle, with a BB date of 20 Apr. 06
A: slightly hazy dark reddish-brown hue, coming with a negligible carpet of big bubbles against a very static body. The yeast-sediments fleeing into the glass are such yellowish chunky flakes... don't know if this is normal?
S: upfront a smooth flow of smoked and roasted malty aroma approaches, with hints of burned beechwood-chips, sweet dark chocolates, black plums, Chinese longan-fruit tea or fresh longan-fruit juice, while the maltiness reveals the second layer of sweet-citrusy/orangey characters after swirling--not too smoky nor too sweet, with the dominating smoked-malty aroma balanced rather nicely with the underlying dark-fruity note and faintly floral hops. Softly aromatic.
T: soft and lightly sweet, lightly-roasted and smoked maltiness prevails in no time, bringing on board an attenuated, earthy bitterness, light char and ashes, roasted nuts, while the dark-fruitiness (smoked black prunes and dried longan-fruit) sustains at the back without explicit sweet edge. The roasted maltiness and its bitter edge gradually intensifies, leading to a herb bitter-sweet lingering aftertaste which is surprisingly clean in the finish.
M&D: overall too soft, static, not refreshing the mouthfeel is, almost like a mixed dried longan-fruit tea. Too flat on the tongue, only saved by the delicate and evolving smoked-malty palate. Not sure it's meant to be a smoked beer or a stout--if the latter is the case, then this stout is way too watery, if still interesting.
