Purchased at the Real Ale beer shop, Richmond. This is a bottle-conditioned beer, coming in a 500ml brown bottle, BB 20 JUN 2006. Served cool in a straight imperial-pint glass.
A: pours a copper-ish hue, very hazy, as the yeast-sediment is seriously disturbed by high fizziness as soon as the bottle is capped open... the effervescent foamy beer head comes rocky and explosive, only slo...wly settles down and leaves very tight lacing. Very impressive.
S: hop-resins, lightly earthy aroma buttressed by a damp and sweet nutty maltiness and a touch of farm-house brew yeastiness... the foam is so thick that aromas can hardly penetrate.
T: strong and rough yeastiness and bitter-sweet nuttiness prevail from the first second onwards; earthy hops (Fuggles) make very little contribution to the overall flavour, and the finish is pleasantly dryish and yeasty. With not much to play with on the palate, this beer perhaps is not as flavoursome as being served clear, I believe, as the yeastiness is simply overpowering and rough.
M&D: light-bodied with good fizzy backbone; alas, the yeasty condition in this case is too vibrant and clouds other presumably enjoyable flavours. One has to try the cask-conditioned version to appreciate this beer.
