Pours a midnight black with little to no light escaping anywhere. Small light brown head that dissipates rather quickly.
Aromas are quite roasty and dark as well; highlighted by chocolate, roasted grains, burnt toast and astringent coffee.
The tastes directly follow the nose with the dark bitter cocoa, roasted grains and acrid dark espresso. An almost woody/earthiness emerges as it warms which I am assuming is from some substantial UK hops, like Fuggles or Kent Goldings.
Mouthfeel is thick and coating. Roasted and bitter flavors linger on the palate for a decent amount of time even after you sample.
Overall, the 4 oz sample was all I needed on this beer as the flavors were fairly intense, but that should be expected for a 8+% ABV export stout. A nice job by a small brewpub for sure and fans of dark, bitter roasted stouts will certainly enjoy.
