Enjoyed a few mason jugs of this brew last night at morrisons (my favorite local gastropub) - apparently this brew is no longer retired.

Poured a deep plum with a thin khaki head. Nose was a really nice malty grape wig a taste to match. Super smooth feel (I really like the feel of kelso brews in general and this was no exception). Very easy drinker and really tasty. Will definitely have this again if I see it as I am a big fan of the style and this was a really nice take on the style. Another winner from kelso.

Served on tap at MexiBBQ in Queens, NY

A: Pours a clear dark amber in color with hints of garnet red when held up to the light. The beer has a quarter finger tall off-white head that reduces to a medium patch of thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of dark fruit sweetness to the malts - possibly raisin or golden raisin.

T: Heavy dark fruit (raisin or golden raisin) sweetness that intensifies as the beer warms. There is also a light presence of Belgian candi sugar.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: This is an enjoyable sipping beer and fairly easy to drink for the style. This beer is a little lighter in body than most others in the style but that was OK since it was being consumed on such a warm day.

On-tap at MexiBBQ, Astoria, NY

A: The beer is slightly hazy amber in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a thin and very dense off white head that died down very slowly and left a large patch of bubbles in the center and a ring around the edge of the glass.
S: Aromas of raisins and dark fruits are present in the nose—these become gradually stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste is similar to the smell but the flavors are a bit stronger and also include some malty sweetness.
M: It feels a bit shy of full-bodied and somewhat smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This doppelbock is extremely easy to drink, especially when compared to other beers in the style; it isn’t as full-bodied compared to other doppelbocks.

A buddy brought this down in a growler from NY. As a disclaimer, we had this at room temperature (and was still quit good).

A: Not very characteristic of a doppelbock. It is much ligher, with an amber, almost golden hue. Very nice, but not fitting for the style.

S: This smells very good, though Again, uncharacteristic of a doppelbock. There is a slight vinegar smell, with warm malty, caramelly tones. This smells like a funky amber.

T: Here is where the bock finally comes into play. It tastes much darker than it looks. There is a warm malty goodness, with high amounts of (christmas?) spices. This is much spicier than i would have imagined.

M: This was a very bright, overly effervescent mouthfeel. It dissipates quickly into a sticky caramel feeling.

O: Overall, this is a pleasant beer. It is lighter than your average doppelbock, but was malty enough to not disappoint. This is not a dead-of-winter beer, it is more so for a light autumn or spring day. Fill up your growler and share with your friends.

Freshy growler from DeCiccos in Ardsley, NY. Pours pretty typical darker almond amber, light khaki head, moderate in every way, retention, lace etc. Malt was the expected sniff, yup, as expected. Nice malty brew, notes of whole wheat crusts, caramel, the advertized raisins, with the abv well hidden. Low hopping , but the back end remains dry, and thus highly drinkable. Nothing real special, just a well put together and malty (duh) doppelbock.

Half growler from New Beer. I forgot I had a spare. Four bucks for the fill. Lunch time. :D

Violent flip of the cap. Beer pours out a dirty copper. Beige-colored head, it has just a twinge of orange.

Smell is of sweet, resiny & floral hops, duck sauce, oat bran, & a long lemon/melon note.

Taste is again floral, but there's also an apricot/orange thing going on. The hops eventually generate a little bit
of minty tin though. Some dusty grain does join in eventually, helping build some vague semblance of a doppelbock, I guess.

Slightly greasy, decently carbed(frothy even), very little(if any) roast, hop centric, balanced alcohol, & quite fruity too. What gives?!

A decent beer, but just all over the place.

On draft at Brazen Head, Brooklyn.

Poured a murky deep amber hue with a one finger creamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a light sweet caramel with some spicy herbal hop.

The taste consisted of an earthy sweet malt, some nuttiness and a spicy hop.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a smooth and complex bock.

Growler obtained in trade with JohnQVegas by way of Bierkraft. Thanks for the opportunity.

Formed a 1 1/4" dense beige head over the clear dark copper brew. Head holds on nicely, with plentiful chunky lacing. Aroma is soapy malt sweetness. Taste is the sweet grains throughout, with a hop presence in the middle, and malty alcohol warmth coming on at the end. Mouthfeel is clean, and drinkability is very good. Good albeit fleetingly available brew.
