On draft at Tap and Barrel, Smithtown, NY.

Poured a hazy light brass hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was very good retention and sticky lacing.

The smell featured a meaty wood smoke with an earthy caramel.

The taste was less smoky with a chewy earthy caramel and light grassiness.

The mouthfeel was full with a bit of chew.

Overall a tasty beer.

Smelling this, it is of a pungent smoke aroma. Not even just smoke, it has strong bacon leanings. It almost smells a bit rancid at times, but really strong. I've had Schlenkerla, which does this in a more subtle fashion, but this beer does not want to joke, it means to smell like bacon.

The taste is just off for me. It has this unctuous flavor that is like drinking bacon grease. It has a really lean body that doesn't fit the smokiness at all. All I can think of is that it tastes like beer with liquid smoke just poured in, not dropped.

I would love to like to beer, but it just shows beer can be made wrong with good intentions. It seriously lacks balance and is quite offensive to the palate.

On tap at Buddha Beer Bar...contract brew for rest Momofuku downtown NYC. Kelos calls it FUKU

A: Hay yellow w/slight haze & yeast floccuation...half finger head that laces in spots.

S: beyond the smoke, bacon is the main aroma that hits the nose

T: As this brew is made for a Japaneese noodle bar, the smoke is clear & outfront w/a medium hop drop & solid maltbackbone.

M: Medium chewy that swirls well.

O: The first light rauchbier I've had & it works quite well w/Kimich/ bacon & garlic.

Draft served into a 16 oz. pint glass with a one-finger head by the time it got to me (it was pulled out of sight). Deep gold body, mostly clear, with a just-off-white head.

Pleasant smoke in the nose, more of the clean type (versus a meaty hickory), and light, sweet malt. Surprisingly balanced, with the depth of smoke and effervescence of the light hopping aroma.

Smooth and light body with a pleasing active carbonation. Nice smoke flavor, not overpowering, but enough to be noticed. Sweet malt and surprisingly assertive hallertau and cascade-like hops round it out. Goes down smooth and crisp, with smoke lingering for a very short while.

A light, sessionable beer with enough deep notes to be interesting but restrained enough to not be tiring.
