12/25/16...pours pinkish copper with some white foam settling on top. Light black berry nose, some sour scents. Strong sour cherry flavor, quick pucker. Pick up the red wine/wood notes, but awash in the sour. Very smooth and fast acting. Nicely made small batch.

Poured gently at 46°F into a Spiegelau wheat glass. Consumed on 15Jun16.
LOOK: One finger of white foam halves itself after twenty seconds. Pinkish amber in color. High amount of cloudiness. Plethora of small and medium bubbles. Lacing is thick and moderate.
SMELL: Red wine barrel aging is very apparent with strong aromas of oak, vanilla, floral notes, plums, currants, raspberries, and liquorice. There are strong black berry aromas that are difficult to determine if they are from the wine barrel aging, the actual refermentation of black berries, or a combination of both. Mild wheat, sour green apple, tobacco, and lemon zest along with subtle sweet cherry aromas present further complexity to the smell.
TASTE: Strong red wine and black berry flavors burst on to the palate. Barrel flavors of mild oak and vanilla immediately follow. Balance is achieved as mild wheat and subtle lemon zest, sweet cherry, and sour green apple flavors roll out while vanilla grows stronger along with the liquorice from the red wine flavors. As all flavors now merge into a single complexity, the wheat grow much stronger.
FEEL: Full-bodied with mild levels of carbonation. Goes down smooth and some what creamy. Finishes crisp.
NOTE: I have to congratulate River Horse on this one. It wasn't very sour, which was disappointing given the name, but the red wine barrel aging did wonders to the complexities of the taste. The refermentation of the blackberries was a marvelous idea that displayed very well. Although the wheat was strong, it was still balanced by the other flavors.

pours a grapefruit-y slight ruby burnt orange with a thick head.

i smell lots of red wine in this. has a slight champagne aroma to it.

taste is tart with mellow red wine. light and full of carbonation. has a nice flavor to it. goes down smooth and finishes tart. leads with the mellow red wine and finishes with tart cherries.

this is a full flavored Berliner Weiss, pretty nice beer. definitely something i would try again.
