Last year was such a success that we wanted to do it again - but even better! A complex combination of dark malts, lactose, and oats, and then aged in bourbon barrels for almost a year, this is a BOMB of an imperial stout.

Malt: Pilsen, Oats, Roasted Barley, Chocolate, Black, Brown, Dark Crystal, Dextrose, Lactose

Hops: Falconer's Flight, Golding, Columbus

Dark, burnt sugary looking body with a one finger head. Soon fading into wispy lacing. Plenty of bourbon barrel and dark sugar in the nose, malty and boozey. Flavors are booze, toasty malt, brown sugar. Not really abrasive, but this could use a year or two to smooth over some. Overall a very nice bourbon barrel stout.

I got this beer a few years back. I received this beer through a trade. I cellar the beer for over two years. This beer is not the Stouty-Stout 2.0 it is OG. The beer is 48 degrees and served in a tulip glass. The hard pour produced a one finger head with retention. The head is creamy and foamy and left no lacing on the glass. The color of the beer is dark brown nearing black. The beer is opaque, no effervescent visible.

The aromas in the beer are coffee, dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oranges, wood, earthy, dark roasted malt, toasted bread, burnt sugar, molasses, medicinal, and raisins.

The flavors of the beer are coffee, dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oranges, wood, earthy, dark chocolate, bready, burnt sugar, molasses, raisins, and char.

The mouthfeel of the beer is thin and round.

The body of the beer is full, low carbonation, and full finish.

I am disappointed. The beer has immense flavors alas, it drinks like a porter. The fundamental profile for an imperial stout was lacking in the beer. If the beer was a thick and chewy it would have a higher score.

Pours pitch black, thick and syrupy, impervious to light. Huge billowy white head that tastes great. Huge aroma of chololate, some. vanilla, brown sugar, molasses, nice bourbon barrel presence. Aroma here boozier as it warms. Flavor follows nose: gobs of mocha, milk chocolate, brown sugar. vanilla.? Has a slight pervasive bitterness to it that fades as you sip it; remniscient of bitter espeesso. Fairly full bodied, excellent carbonation edge to a creamy body. overall this is a very nice example of the style. I will buy another to cellar.

On tap.

A - Dark brown/black pour with very thin lacing.

S - Chocolate, dark fruit, amd bourbon. No alcohol detected in the nose at all for a beer this big. Overall, for a big beer, the nose is light.

T - Bourbon, oak, chocolate. Nice lingering bitter cocoa on the very back end with some pine bitterness surfacing after everything else settles.

M - Very nice body that's thick and silky.

O - Not much complexity and a little harsh. However, for 12%, it's fairly well hidden.

25.4 oz bottle to snifter.

LOOK: dark black, big light brown head, lasting, foamy bubbles, very appealing.
AROMA: lots of bourbon and brown sugar and cocoa.
TASTE: bourbon and chocolate, also nutty. Very tasty. Slight Hints of licorice and mineral.
FEEL: full bodied, smooth and velvety. Low carbonation, but not completely flat.

Great job by river horse. Not incredibly complex, but a pretty beer and very tasty.

5 oz pour, on tap at Killarney's.

Would have preferred a nice snifter instead of the 5 oz shot glass I got it in, but the quality is undeniable even in less than ideal conditions. An excellent stout. No changes.

2017 bottle to snifter.

I still get all my tasting notes from 4/30/17.

This beer holds up well. Great job by Riverhorse. This is the last one in my cellar so I'll be looking for more to age for future consumption.
