A dark brown, almost black brew with a tan head that lasts for a very short time. There are a lot of dark malts in the aroma. I also picked up quite a bit of chocolate in the smell of this one.
The body is medium with a good carbonation level, and it stays pretty smooth throughout. There is a nice roasty flavor that dominates. A blend of chocolate stays with you throughout, and kicks in a little harder in the dry aftertaste.
This is definitely the best brew I had from River Horse. I was very disappointed with the others, but this one was OK.

Red-amber body topped by a half-inch off white head, and dropping. Slight aroma of toasted malt, but really almost no nose at all. Taste is a bit of caramel malty, with just enough hops to balance it off. Almost no aftertaste. Really quite bland, a problem with several River Horse beers. A name like "Dark Harvest Ale" conjuers up an image of sipping by the fire late at night. In fact, while its fine for tossing back with an everyday meal, there is nothing exceptional here. I'll probably buy this again next year, but only in the spirit of "support your local brewer".

Quite clear, but very deep mahogany in color. The tan head is quite full and creamy, holding well but eventually dropping to a good collar and thin surface covering - and leaving some nice lace. The aroma is somewhat limited but offers some lightly toasted caramel malt and gently grassy hops. The body is medium/light with a very fine and zesty carbonation that gives a gentle caress to the tongue. The flavor is a quite one-sided with a lightly acidic, dryish, and earthy caramel malt combined with grassy hop flavor. It finishes with a little more complexity, as it receeds with dryish toffee notes, some lingering grassy hop flavor, and occassional light notes of chocolate. Well balanced, maintaining it's malt flavors but remaining dry - in fact, maybe too balanced. As it is it's kind of dull... and I think it could stand to be either a little less bitter, or even more bitter to make something stand out and give it some more character! Nice, but limited in appeal.

Dark Brown beer with a thin, white head. Smells of coffee, burnt, roasted grains. Little hop aroma, but pleasingly bitter aftertaste. Drinkable, but nothing to write home about.
