This one poured out like Coca-Cola: same dark brown color, same carbonation and same quickly disappearing head. Not much glass lacing can be expected. There's certainly some chocolate within the smell, but roasted malt is predominant. The taste is decidedly chocolate, rather than roasted malt. It's not bitter, but it's not too sweet, just right for a chocolate stout. Demerits must be given for the thinnish mouthfeel. A little more body is all that keeps this from being a delightful indulgence.

too much for me, overly chocolate and boozy, i'll still with their solid Milk Stout.

Very good dark chocolate stout. strogn chocolate flavor with great coffee finish and a hint of vanilla and booze. Creamy finish. Excellent dessert beer.

Picked this up a few weeks back up at Gary's in Wayne, as it had been a *very* long time since I had any beers from River Horse (4 out of the 8 I've reviewed on here are retired). This came in a small can and didn't look too heavy for Stout and thankfully, that was the case as it was easygoing and tasty enough to enjoy during yet another warm and muggy night!
Of course, this poured like milk chocolate and was not too thick or thin. A massive, mocha bubbly head topped this off as it settled quickly and unevenly. Almost no lacing was left down the side of my pint glass, which was about the only drawback to this beer. Chocolate, roasted malt, a hint of maple, and some faint milk were in the nose as the taste had more of the former than the latter. Some coffee and a hint of espresso was here too as this almost felt like a Breakfast Stout - down to the hint of creamer that came through in the aftertaste and on my palate. A bit more lactose or sweetener would have been nice but as it was, this was a cross between coffee and chocolate as a bit of powder was in the mix for the duration of my session.
Not a lot of alcohol in this but I felt myself warm up a bit while drinking this. It didn't last in my glass for long as it would have easy to crack another one open after finishing this off. Chewy oats ensured that this would be a full beer, with hardly any carbonation to keep this light and on it's proverbial toes. Easily the best beer that I've had from these guys, it's nice to see that they've upped their game and canned more of their offerings. Jersey needs more breweries like this!

3rd review. Best of River Horse in my view.
a) As expected, dark, 1 inch tan dense head, not much lace.
s) Roast, chocolate, malt, ample aromas.
t) balanced just right, between mid-weight strong stout and the chocolate and not overly sweet.
f) This is the best part, slick, creamy, weighty, nice finish.
o) Could be dessert, could make a great black and tan, great stout. Sum greater than its parts.

Medium light carbonation with a just above average body. Overall a very nice feel to it
Aroma is dark chocolate, black coffee, milk chocolate, chocolate pastry bread, roasted malt and chocolate candy.
Taste is milk chocolate, roasted malt, dark chocolate, black coffee. Taste is less sweet than aroma hints at which works great. Aroma was rich and deep but the flavor is more straightforward chocolate and coffee with the emphasis on mixed types of chocolate.
This is definitely a hit for river horse, one of their stronger offerings

River Horse Chocopotamus is River Horses' newest attempt at a chocolate dessert beer. A few years ago, we had their 6.5% ABV 'Chocolate Porter', which was good.. last year, we had 'Mocha Lisa', a chocolate/coffee 9%ABV porter in a 16 oz. can, also good. This winter, I called River Horse a few times, hoping to learn when either of these would be released. Well.. both have been discontinued. A sales associate informed me that River Horse had discovered that beers labeled 'porter' really didn't sell that well, but, fear not! A CHOCOLATE STOUT was imminent!
Well, here it is, 'River Horse Chocopotamus Chocolate Stout', and I must say, I think it is superior to the previous incarnations. It retains the deft handling of chocolate as an ingredient that River Horse has previously displayed, but applied to an oatmeal stout. There is a better mouthfeel, and a more robust taste than previous iterations. The nose is mild, but sweet. A dark tan 1 inch head, and modest lacing, accompany a tasty brew that is eminently drinkable. As Ernie Banks famously said, "Let's play two!" I am adding this to my cellar, and intend to have it available, all year.
