16oz can purchased from the fridge as a single from a local bar/bottle shop for $8. Canned on 6/18/21, so this is just over 2 months old.
Look: Pours a moderately hazy golden pale color with a rocky white head that has receded to a thin fluffy layer along the rim. Looks nice.
Smell: Nice red grapfruit aroma. It smells very citrusy. I'm getting a sharp, medicinal, somewhat dank and peppery aroma on the back end after agitating the beer; I've never had Talus hops before, so I am not sure what to expect. Overall, it smells nice.
Taste: Delicious. I could really see this as a near-perfect summer beer. It has a very flavorful, nice grapefruit flavor up front and the body is light to medium yet full and refreshing. The finish is moderately bitter and pithy coating the mouth with grapefuit oil flavors, and then you get this very dry finish a few seconds later that leaves you craving another gulp. I'm not sure if there is any grapefruit juice in here, but the beer itself tastes very juicy and quaffable until the super dry surprise finish. For me, it's hard to pick out the characteristics of the Talus hop because I have never had it before; it's hard to distinguish the hop bitterness from the grapefruit peel/pith bitterness so they did a good job in bringing these elements together. This is a very crushable beer.
Feel: This is a light- to medium-bodied beer with a relatively soft mouthfeel.
Overall: It's been a long time since I have had anything from River Horse, and this is my first time reviewing one of their beers. This is really good. It's not mindblowing, but it totally works for the season.
From the can:
American Wheat Beer Brewed with Grapefruit
Tranquil and tropical, Sunset Citrus was designed to be the perfect pour on a cool, Summer night. Real grapefruit peel and Talus hops accent the citric character, whithout sacrificing drinkability. We united red and white grapefruit for a gentle, fruity blend of full flavor that doesn't overpower the style of this classic American wheat beer.
