Pours a dense, frothy head that laces very well. Citrus hop aroma. Copper/burnt umber color. Starts bitter, yet sweet. A flash of metallic, then back to bitterness (but with a strong citric character). The finish is subdued citrus on top of biscuit.

This is interesting. It's sweet malt and citrus hops, and it's balanced well.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium red-orange amber with a fine half finger light ivory head with good retention. Aroma of sweet caramal malt and grassy and citrus hops, mild citrus. Flavor is citrusy carmel malt, grassy hops, tea; mildly tart. Finish is astringently bitter with grassy hop bitterness. Medium bodied. The malt body is pleasant, but unassuming with good red ale character, but is overwhelmed by the almost harsh bitterness of the finish. There are good components here, but unbalanced. Hops need more herbal flavor for their alpha content. Satisfactory, but uneven.

12oz can with a date

look is a brownish red, almost the color of the can. smell has a little too much "dry leaf" character that i find undesirable in some red ales. Taste is more imperial red ale than IPA: lots of drying scottish malt and juicy vegetal hops. Tangy bitter finish with a hint of alcohol.

One of the best beers I've had recently.

12oz can served in a Dogfish Head IPA glass

A - Pours a hazy amber/red with a giant 3 fingers of head that retains and leaves stellar 3D rings of lacing.

S - Soapy hops, very earthy, some dry cardboard, some tropical fruit, citrus,

T - Grainy malts, the yeast is twangy and upfront, lemon rind, earthy/spicy bitterness, there's an odd astringent note running throughout the beer. The beer turns very dry toward the semi-fruity finish.

M - Heavy side of medium body, creamy feel, grainy at times, dry finish.

This tastes like a very average homebrew. It's very earthy and given the name they could have used peat moss in the recipe? The beer looks great but after that it all goes down hill. It's not terrible but from all the other choices out there this is a one and done.

Aroma: This one has a lot of hop aroma--seems like a mix of cascade and the earthy English hops. There is a bit of vegetal, green character that cuts down the citrus. Light fruity esters are present, along with a sweet caramel malt.

Appearance: Deep orange to almost red color. Huge tan head that persists, but not as extreme as the other JP beers. Very clear beer.

Flavors: Strong hopping up front, hint of citrus and a fair amount of musty earthy hop. Mellow caramel maltiness into the finish. Ends with a bit of vegetal astringency. Mouthfeel is aquous and not as pleasing as I would like.

Overall: The best of the three JP beers I tried, but still not quite right. The watery mouthfeel hurts this one, I think a bit more here and this would be higher in score for me. I like the concept of an English hopped red ale, and this was close to fulfilling that goal. The vegetal character hurt it though, a risk with high hopping rates. Drinkable, but I wouldn't order another.
