Excellent beer. Has a smokey almost Scotch like smell and taste. Great with pretzel rods and peanut butter. Dark and brooding beer. Like it a lot, must get more.

12 oz. bottle poured into a pilsner glass.
Pours a rich brown with one and a half fingers of off white head with some slick lacing. The nose is moderate and made up of mainly caramel malt and some light roast aromas. Taste is sweet and similar to the nose with the addition of some sweet chocolate. The flavor is fairly rich and there is a small point of cloying sweetness at the finish. The body is on the low side of medium with good moderate carbonation that gives a little bite at the finish.
This is OK, not great but certainly worth trying if the opportunity arises.

A- Pours a deep chestnut to borderline brown color with a half-inch tan head that fades slowly, but leaves very little lacing.
S- Toffee, caramel, and baked bread. Some brown sugar aromas and just a touch of alcohol as the brew warms.
T- Sweetness of caramel and sugar upfront followed by a somewhat pithy malt flavor in the middle and ending with a kiss of hops.
M- Medium to full feel with average carbonation.
O- It's not quite up to the level of the classic German examples, but it's well worth a try if you see it around. I continue to be both satisfied and impressed with these new, classic examples being brewed by Straub. Cheers!

One of the few Straub beers I haven't had yet. Paid about 2 bucks for the single.
A - Good dark brown color almost pitch except for a deep brown hue at the base. Head is mocha tinted with great lacing.
S - Hoppy malty and sweet with a bready smelling body. Smells good
T - Sweet malty bready and somewhat sourdough like with a somewhat dry finish. Quite good actually.
M - Sweet and malty with medium somewhat chewy body.
Overall this tastes pretty darn good not sure why folks think its too sweet to me the sourdough bread malts and hops are really the body of this beer.

Dark brown with almost no head. Smell is mostly caramel malt with some spice from the yeast. Taste is pretty much the same as the smell, sweet throughout with clean finish. Carbonation, weight and "stickiness" feel about average for a double bock. Overall not the most interesting double bock I've had but I'd still drink it again.

For a dobblebock this wasn't a very complicated one. Had the dark brown almost black look with a slightly brownish head. Very nice presentation. Smell was malty and a little alcoholly, but overall fairly good nose. Not a lot of hops to this beer and is really sweet. A few layers to the malts as you can detect a roasted, toffee and a caramel notes. Each sip does present a different complexity as you recognize the first flavor and search for the next. The feel leaves an oily layer on the palette and an alcoholly aftertaste. Seems to be made from an extract as the beer takes on a syrupy feel on the tongue.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #89 (June 2014):
Sweet, Malty, Bready, Thick
This brew is a bit of a malt clinic, layers of sweetness, graininess and breadiness open up sip to sip. Not a completely massive brew though its foundation is slightly warming though there is some higher drinkability present. A decent rendition of the style, was hoping for a bit more balance though still good overall.

Great tasting Dopplebock, very similar to St Nickolas Bock. The carbonation and head were lacking a bit though. I had it on draught so I know it wasn't a bottling issue or an old beer. The taste was near perfection though.

This beer just doesn't sit right with me. It's a bit thin for the style, and has almost a skunky element to the taste. The nose also features a skunky element as well. A beer that could definitely be improved upon.

12 oz. bottle poured into pilsener
(10/23/14 bottled-on date)
(courtesy of @TongoRad via the NBS BIF)
L: dark amber-orange up to light ... looks like dark toffee; clear but hard to tell how clear ... beer looks almost black with dark brown/purple highlights sitting on the table; head is small, not 1/2 inch tall and beige/tan colored, no sticking; only minimal lacing but the beer keeps a fantastic collar of thick tan foam
S: dark fruits ... fig, dates ... fruitcake perhaps ... definitely on the darker side of malt notes but still very sweet; dark bread malt -- very cool ... it's like raisin bread or toasted bread malt; a light mustiness or dust
T: figs, raisins ... sweet dark malt for sure; toasted raisin bread; dust; just a hint of butter in there ... a buttery piece of raisin bread ... not sure the dark malt gets quite that far into the raisin range, but it's close
F: solid midweight, perhaps even heavier than that; good carbonation; just a bit lighter than a good stout -- there's some heft here
O: bravo! a good doppelbock with solid dark-malt sweetness, the nose perhaps a bit lighter than the taste and both good. the label claims the beer has caramel and toffee notes, and it doesn't lie -- some of the darker fruit notes do have a toasted caramel/toffee similarity; can't taste the alcohol, but it's offering some warmth
