Part of the Peter Straub Signature Brews Adventure Series #2. Helles Highway is a traditional Munich-style pale lager. Its blonde color brings to mind warm sunny days and it‘s smooth subtle flavors are reminiscent of many of the rolling scenic by-ways throughout the PA Wilds™, like Quehanna Highway, Wykoff Run Road, Route 6, and Route 555. Helles Highways’ mild spice and floral hop aroma is balanced nicely with light toasty malt sweetness and will leave you anxiously waiting to reach your final destination to enjoy!

Pours a pale, well-carbonated yellow with decent but quickly dissipating head. Moderate lacing, which is pleasantly suprising. Not much smell to speak of. Taste is muted crisp grain and mild hops. Feel is crisp, carbonated, and dry. Overall, not a style I prefer, and a little ovefcaebonated for my taste, but a solid enough summer beer.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Big two fingers of white froth on top of a brilliantly clear pale golden brew. Rich aroma and flavor of a delicately placed malt character, bready with some hay and faint grapenut-like flavor. Modest hopping is just enough to balance with a hint of spice and herbal flavor. With the malt being the showcase here it does not seem to want to leave the palate with a mild fresh grainy semi-dry finish. Very enjoyable and packed with flavor.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tumbler style pint glass.

Pours clear and golden with almost one finger of white head with some lacing that eventually settled to a foamy cap. To my nose lighter style lagers are usually dominated by that "skunky" lager smell and this one is no different but it also has some decent grainy malt aromas. It tastes grainy, malty and slightly sweet with a bit of hop bitterness and a pretty clean finish. Mouth feel is to the high side of light bodied, the carbonation seems about right for the style and it drinks fairly smooth.

I'm not a fan of this style but this is fairly good.

Poured into a small tasting glass; color is straw/gold, head is bright white with mainly fine bubbles, light lacing, and great head retention and initial presentation.

Smell is fairly grainy, neutral barley malt flavors, touch of biscuit and toast, hint of bitterness.

Taste is blend of neutral grain and biscuity barley malt; some toast, then a heavy crisp hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel is crisp, sharp and lightly bitter, a bit sharper than some helles lagers, but very nice to balance some of the grainier flavors.

Overall, a very good helles style lager, crisp and bitter, with neutral malt flavors.

Very white head and a beautiful golden color. Nose is filled with crisp floral hops and a slight hint of malts. Seems to be made from an extract; the taste and feel has an oily aspect to them. Leaves a slight alcohol taste with the aftertaste. Hops are dominant flavor; that consist of pine, flower peddles and slight bitterness mixture. A fairly crisp flavor to the beer and it's relatively enjoyable to drink.

Typically this style isn't rated highly but I think if we are going by style this one is fantastic. Very impressed by what Straub is doing these days. I don't have a lot of experience with Helles' but this is a very well done beer.

Straub Helles
on tap at the brewery, 31 Jan 2015

Appearance: Clear golden body beneath a creamy head of bright white. Fine bubbles can be seen steadily streaming upwards. Head retention and lacing are average.

Aroma: Distinctly grainy malt and spicy and herbal hops.

Flavor: There's a nice balance between the slightly sweet and distinctly grainy Munich malts and the spicy, earthy, and herbal hops. It's gently nutty, which is nice, but it's also a touch vegetal (like the inside of a bell pepper) which can be distracting. A moderate bitterness balances and it finishes drying as the malt recedes leaving the peppery and spicy hops behind.

Mouthfeel: Medium to medium-light in body and crisp.

Overall: Straightforward and easy to drink, but also fairly unique.

12 oz. bottle poured into pilsner
(10/20/14)
(courtesy of @TongoRad via NBS BIF)

L: pale yellow, clear, small 1/2-inch head of white foam that doesn't stick; very few bubbles showing in column; color and clarity are fantastic; no lacing, but tidy little collar of white foam

S: lemons, citrus, straw, wet straw ... hay ... like a hay ride in the rain -- very nice; subdued sweet malt note ... a bit bready but mainly just sweet; some grain, rice, corn; sour grain

T: straw, lemon, dirt/earth ... has a slight sweetness to it, but it's very subtle ... cracker from the malt, not full-on bread

F: very nice, good carbonation

O: seems to hit the right notes for the style ... a simple lager with plenty of flavor, a nice lingering bitterness playing off the light malt sweetness. a beer made for filling a big mug over and over and over.
