Choco-violet with cathedraling tan head.
Liquorice, blackberry, and grape soda on the nose.
Sweet coffee, cola syrup, black currant, an ashy hit then some oily wood and lemon peel hops to end.
Vinous finish and tight linger.
Dry, soft, lt-med.

Concord grape and dark berry but lean in the end. Tart and fruity, without much chocolate or roast. Different, not necessarily worse, still easy to drink.

11th May 2012 saw me on a mini pub crawl of Wellington: my local Wetherspoons had this on hand pull, so I had a pint.

Dark ruby red body with a thin head of off-white, which stayed the distance.

Malty nose giving off esters of black coffee and hints of dark berries.

The taste was almost all maltiness, very little hop bitterness or presence felt.

I thought the body weak and watery to be honest.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of April 2012, so it's rather out of date. Acquired from a webshop a few months back (yet another virtually out-of-date purchase). According to the label, it's named after the Mulberry harbours from WWII - temporary harbours developed for the D-day landings. The dark mild was a popular style of ale during the wartime period.

Poured into a Guinness pint glass. Bottle-conditioned. A deep, hazy reddish-brown hue with strong carbonation and visible sediment. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam with superb retention; this settles slightly to leave a thick surface layer. Aroma of nutty dark malt with notes of earthy yeast and hints of caramel and chocolate. Faint sweetness.

Tastes of mild dark malt with a dry finish. Subtly sweet. Notes of dry, earthy yeast, faint chocolate and hints of caramel and stewed hops in the background. Dry and mild upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is velvety smooth with good body. Despite the high carbonation, a light, pleasing tingliness results. Slightly astringent. Aftertaste of earthy yeast and faint dark malt.

Not bad, though not the best mild I've tried. It looks great, with a lovely fluffy head that stays till the end. The aroma is OK, with some dark malty notes, but the flavour is rather insipid. The malt just doesn't have much intensity, and the yeast dominates. Perhaps this is due to the age of the bottle - after all, live yeast will keep developing. Lovely body to smooth things over - envelops the tongue. A worthy effort; worth trying if you come across it.
