Deep copper color with small, silky head. Nose is weak and comes off malty, which isn't misleading. This beer is a big pile of caramel-sweet malt. Even for a unfiltered Octoberfest. There is a mild tinge of floral hops at the finish (where hops usually show up to play) but really this is a sweet one. Would be a great beer for a cool autumn evening, too bad it is 82 degrees here in SF in late september. Mouthfeel is very silky smooth and delightful, only reason I notched it down to 4 is that the sweetness makes it a touch sticky. Definitely a good brew, and it tastes really nice fresh from the brewery.

Enjoyed this one at the Beach Chalet in San Francisco, watching the Pacific crash into the continental shelf. Excellent spot for a beer and a good memory.
Deep copper body with an off-white head that had good retention and out down some nice lace. Spicy caramel aroma mingling with bread and floral hopping is more or less where an Oktoberfest should be. The flavour is grainy and sweet with lots of caramel, and a mild floral bite in the finish. Quite straightforward and simple, but well done. The body is fairly well-balanced, with a medium mouthfeel and carbonation.
A passable o-fest. Not the best, but worth a try. Why the hell its still on tap in December is anybody's guess.

One, of two, bottled gifts from a friend who had been up to SF for a few days.
After the excellent Riptide Red Ale that I tried earlier, I had high hopes for this other offering from the Beach Chalet Brewery and Restaurant, San Francisco.
Comes in a 22 fl.oz Bomber, that has one of those plastic shrink wrapper type labels. This bottle has a picture of a surfer dude doing the biz atop a wave. I note that the label states that this beer is 5.6% ABV.
It is Amber in color, and initially pours with a huge white billowy white head. The head laces well and as it settles it looks absolutely fantastic.
Thats the good news. Now the Bad News.
Aromas are very grainy, and have an ash tray aspect that is a little off-putting. This follows through into the taste. A light malt entrance makes way into a doughy middle and a mild caramel finish that has some hop presence.
I lost interest in this beer halfway through drinking it.
Sadly this offering disappoints on two levels. I am not sure that it is really a suitable style to be called Oktoberfest, and even if it was, it has too much of an annoying ash-tray character, just like the awful smell left on your clothes from a night spent in a smoky Belgium Bar.
