Jacob Hackstein Pilsner is brewed by the "Old European Brewing
Company" of Cold Spring, Minnesota, which means this brew was
really made at the Cold Spring Brewery, formerly known as Gluek.
You have to wonder- "why Hackstein"?. What was the Cold Spring
Marketing Department thinking? Was it an attempt at tapping
into some kind of faux traditional theme? A new ironical tipple for
the hipsters? In the end it does not matter.
The little four-pack of cans beckoned to me from the Cash Wise
Liquor bargain cart- obviously a broken remnant of a suitcase. It
was only a buck-thirty-nine- but no bargain, as we shall see.
The brew pours a stiff head over a pale yellow brew. There is no
apparent carbonation. The nose is a bit of corn syrup- the flavor
is the same- slightly sweet corn syrup- no hops at all. Mouthfeel
is thin and a little cloying. The brew imparts a weird coating onto
the teeth. In the end it's just a grim, bland, mildly alcoholic swill.
The can says it's "brewed in the finest European traditions".
It's no wonder then, that so many people, picking something cheap,
and therefore safe, at the bottle shop, taste stuff like this and then think
that beer is cheap crap for drunken yahoos.

pours out an extremely fizzy light golden colour. ample carbonation produces a thin fizzy white head. corny adjunct aroma. creamed corn flavour, a bit metallic and watered down. not really offensive, but really bland. no hops are detected. mouthfeel is smooth like a glass of water with a body thinner than most light beers. not really drinkable unless your shotgunning these or drinking out of a beer bong.
cheap ass beer that might be used to cook with or quench a thirst in the middle of the desert.
can says "Old European Brewing Co. Cold Spring, MN"
another crap beer from gluek.
