I am rating it as a specialty stout...there is nothing special about it....I got it free and I'll drink it, but it has to be the worst stout I have ever had...

It looks like a bock or octoberfest...clear...transparent...a little white head...nose has that spoiled smell I have come to appreciate with these JJ beers (particularly the Red Ale which I have yet to rate but may score the lowest score ever on this site)..

Thin...tastes like a light beer in texture....has some sweetness on the buds but no maple whatsoever...I've had several of these and have strained and strained and tried to convince myself it was here but it's not...

Low bittering....on the sweeter side but not oversweet....really a very low quality stout that might pass muster if you threw it on the Amber Bock tap at the local college bar, but really is not very good...

Dark brown-orange. Totally transparent. Very pale for a "stout". Beige head builds up briefly and settles out to a film.
Soapy sweet nose. Faintly malty.
Taste is pretty soapy as well. No roasted tones perceived. Very faintly chocolately....that might even be a stretch. Watered down syrup sweetness. No maple. Actually, I got more maple flavors out of their Black Ale. Slightly sour towards the end. Hops are barely noticed in the finish. Not much going on here.
Watery body. This is a joke of a stout.

The other J James brews I tried were at least moderately enjoyable. This one is just blah.

Thanks anyway, Bighuge. I am still glad to help you take care of your supply of this stuff.

Color is dark ruby. A brown head rims the glass. Smell is a little sweet. Just a titch of maple on the nose. This is a pretty sad excuse for a stout. It tastes a lot like their black ale. Go figure. I taste very little maple. And I get very little of the roasted malt and chocolate tones that I associate with stouts. What I do get is that over-riding sweet taste that is a staple with these Jeremiah James brews. Wouldn't recommend this one, however it is a drinkable beer.

I'm not sure what's going on in Cold Springs, but there seems to be a lot of different labels coming out of there (Quake, Old Fort Brewing, Aspen Meadow, Jeremiah James which also reads Colonial Brewing Company on the label, Gluek). Whatever the case, I wouldn't classify what they're doing in Cold Springs craft brewing.

Thank you to dude for a free case of this brew.
