50 cl. bottle. Described as a "cervoise chaude". From the label: "Bière au miel et aux épices, à rechauffer à feu doux (sans la capsule!) avec un bâton de cannelle. A déguster tiède." All of which translates to: "Beer brewed with honey and spices, to be heated over a low flame (without the cap!) with a stick of cinnamon. To be consumed warm." After heating it up, I split the bottle in half, tasting one part in a glass by itself, the other half in a mug with a stick of cinnamon. The ratings are based on the sample WITH the cinnamon, since that's how the brewer intends it to be consumed.

A: Cloudy dark-brown, like a dark iced tea. No head, just a few bubbles. I was told this beer was uncarbonated, so this didn't come as much of a surprise.

S: Strong, super sweet floral honey aroma with some background spices that give it some Scotch ale-esque notes. The half with the cinnamon stick adopted a pronounced cinnamon aroma that partly helped balance the sweetness.

T: Yikes. Sickly cloying, with no real depth of flavor. The sweetness is reminiscent of orange blossom honey, but is way too intense to be remotely pleasing. Some herbal hints appear halfway through but are easily smothered by the honey. The cinnamon stick helps tone down the sweetness, but most of its own character is lost amongst the overpowering honey flavor. Gets even more terrible as it cools, and is probably a little more palatable boiling hot than just "warm". It tastes like they just added bucketloads of honey and a sprinkle of spices to the wort and then bottled it. Fortunately the finish is relatively clean except for a mildly pleasant floral hint, though even this is sort of counteracted by a resurgent sweetness and dirt-like herbal aftertaste that emerges a few seconds later.

M: The combination of no carbonation and intense sweetness makes this a very cloying, syrupy brew. I guess you could say it's medium bodied.

O: This was a pretty horrific experience for me and I found the beer by itself to be virtually undrinkable. Tastes like an under-spiced, one-dimensional, overly sweet gluhwein. If someone is curious enough to give this a go, I'd say make sure: A. You like gluhwein, B. It's piping hot, and C. Add the cinnamon. If you satisfy those three criteria, I'm almost positive you'll have a better experience than me. But no guarantees...
