1977 Silver Jubilee Ale. 33CL bottle, gold foil wrapped.
A very slight hiss when I popped the cap, I poured it, vigorously, into my New Belgium goblet. It has a deep amber colour and brings a small thin layer of foam with a touch of lacing that was very impressive for a 33 year old brew. My score 4.5
The smell is very strong. Plenty of alcohol there with a ton of dark fruits, mostly plums, and a definite woody aroma. Now some Sherry like smells are coming into the picture as well as some caramel malt sweetness, though the latter is tough to pick out. My score 4.5
The taste *is* sweet with the caramel, has definite notes of wood and Sherry, some fig flavour, a light nuttiness of almonds, a a very light note of hop tartness that I can only taste in the finish. But to be fair in this review, all of the flavours, though tasty, imho are well past their peak and are probably a meer shadow of what they were like when this beer was fresh. My score 3.0
The mouthfeel is on the thin side with close to zero carbonation despite the promising look with the foam. My score 3.0
Drinkability? The alcohol, whatever it may be, isn't a problem here at all....the muted flavours of a brew past its potential prime are. That being said, I have no regrets about acquiring this brew. Score 4.0
