The beer pours a dark brown color with a thick frothy brown head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a sweet caramel malt scent along with a nice roasted malt aroma. The taste is average. It has a syrupy caramel and chocolate malt flavor that goes down like molasses and finishes way too sweet. The mouthfeel is average as well. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a beer with some enormous malt flavor, but it's just too sweet and syrupy for me to enjoy.

After having the very good oatmeal stout that they brew here, I tried the Nickel City Dark. Unfortunately, the bitterness of the taste was just too much. The apperance is good -- black with a foamy tan head, and the smell is good as well--sweet, malty, a hint of licorice. The taste however was just too jarring. It tasted like 'dirty coffee' for lack of a better phrase. I'm all for beers that have that hint of coffee too them, but this just missed the mark. Not a beer you could have more than one or two AT MOST in one sitting.

Another below average offering from Buffalo's oldest brewpub,I didnt know where to categorize it but I think it fit the American porter category best.Poured a deep brown with some redish highlights thruout with tight forming off white head, there was some real big pronounced dark brown sugar and molasses in the nose wich is even moe prevelant on the palate nut a little less so in the nose.Flavors are completely brown sugar and molasses not much else its very sweet and cloying after just a few sips.A real clunker I thinks its a porter whatever it is its not good.
